MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsSouthland · Pete Rossomando · 8-5 last season · No. 31 in our FCS ratings
Aiden McCown runs an offense that finished 82nd in scoring a year ago, but the 21st-place finish in the final Coaches Poll actually undersells this group, since the model's No. 31 entering 2026 points to a defense that held teams to 23.0 points per game as the steadier bet to carry Lamar back into Southland contention.
Can Aiden McCown handle a full workload as Lamar's projected starting quarterback? The bigger issue is what surrounds him: with Xavier Coleman's 542 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns gone from the backfield, McCown is set up to throw more than lean on a proven ground game. That shift favors him settling in as a passer by midseason rather than the offense stalling out of the gate.
The trip to Louisiana is the outlier here, an 11 percent shot against a class well above this level, but the season actually turns on the two coin-flip road games sandwiched around it: a 35 percent line at SE Louisiana and a 36 percent home date with Stephen F. Austin. Pete Rossomando's group gets plenty of business it should handle, home dates against Northwestern State (87 percent) and Houston Christian (84 percent) chief among them, which is why a schedule ranked 51st in difficulty still projects to just 6-6. Split those three defining games even once and this team is pushing toward the playoff bubble instead of scrapping for .500.

Pete Rossomando took Lamar to 8-5 and 4-3 in the Southland last fall, and the power ratings back it up at No. 31, a number well ahead of where this program usually sits. That combination of a winning record, a plus mark in league play and a national ranking that outpaces the Southland ceiling is the foundation Rossomando builds from in 2026. The on-field results give him real runway to keep building rather than start over.
Lamar went 5-2 in one-score games and squeezed out wins in league play despite getting outgained by 22.7 yards per game against those same opponents, the exact profile of a record built to fall back in 2026. The defense gives real reason for hope on its own, ranking 23rd in yards allowed and 15th in yards per play allowed, but it was also scored on cheaply, a cracks-under-pressure red flag more than a badge of efficiency. Aiden McCown returns at quarterback off a 1,436-yard, 10-touchdown season, and with an offense that finished 99th in total yardage, his job is to make the attack less dependent on the tight-game magic that carried 2025.
Aiden McCown holds the job outright in 2026, which matters because Lamar's passing game was a genuine problem last fall, ranking 101st nationally at 169 yards per game and converting third downs at just 32.9 percent. The departure of Robert Coleman, who threw for 585 yards, isn't the story here; the room got a low-usage transfer add in Evan Bullock from Louisiana Tech, but McCown is the one who has to turn a 5.00-yards-per-play offense into something more explosive. With a run game that graded out respectably at 144 yards per game, McCown's job is simply to stop leaving that production on the field through the air.
Lamar's entire backfield production from 2025 walked out the door with Xavier Coleman, Major Bowden and Damien Moore all gone, wiping out the bulk of a run game that still managed 144 yards per game despite a stalled passing attack. Parker Jenkins arrives from East Carolina to fill that void, though his modest 256 yards and 2 touchdowns there suggest a complementary piece rather than a workhorse. With the passing game ranked 101st in yards per game and third-down conversions at just 32.9%, Pete Rossomando needs Jenkins and whoever lines up alongside him to keep defenses honest on the ground, because Lamar's offense has little margin elsewhere to hide an inefficient rushing attack.
Kyndon Fuselier and Izaha Jones combined for the bulk of Lamar's production a year ago, and both are gone, along with Jamahdia Whitby. That leaves a passing attack that already ranked 101st in passing yards per game and 100th in third down rate searching for answers without its top two targets. Pete Rossomando's offense leaned on the ground game at 144 yards per game for good reason, and until someone emerges to replace that lost production through the air, the run will have to keep carrying the load.
JaCorey Hyder's 16 catches and 221 yards walk out the door along with Devyn Gibbs' 16 grabs, wiping out virtually every tight end target from a passing game that ranked 101st in the country at 169 yards per game. Pete Rossomando's offense already struggled to move the ball through the air, sitting 94th in yards per play and 96th in success rate, and losing that tight end production without a proven pass-catcher in the room only narrows the margin for error on third downs, where Lamar converted just 32.9% a year ago. Whoever emerges at tight end inherits a passing attack that needs more explosive plays, not fewer options.
Pete Rossomando's offense managed just 5.00 yards per play and converted only 32.9% of third downs a year ago, numbers that trace straight back to a line now losing five of its pieces in Knox Boyd, Reggie Brooks, Matthew Dallao, Elias Ripley and Kortez Winslow. The lone reinforcement on record is Katy product Adedapo Adetosoye, a three-star interior addition tasked with helping fix a front that ranked 99th in total yards per game and 96th in offensive success rate. Lamar's rushing attack held up reasonably well at 144 yards per game, but with that much turnover up front and only one name to point to, the run game's floor is the real question for 2026.
A defensive front that held up well enough to post a top-15 mark in yards per play allowed (5.10) now churns through real turnover, with Christian Booker, Kei'Trone Simpson and Peyton Christian all gone from the two-deep. Pete Rossomando went to the portal for DeMone Green, who posted 1.5 TFL at Rice last season, and added Malcolm Graham off the high school ranks at edge to restock the pass rush. The rushing defense was the softer spot at 144 yards allowed per game (50th nationally), and Green's interior presence will be tested there before anything else.
Lamar's defense finished 15th nationally in yards per play allowed a year ago, a number that belies a linebacker corps losing its top two tacklers in Brayden Faulkner and Jaden Maronen. Neither departure was a huge statistical hole to fill on paper, but the group now needs someone to emerge as the every-down thumper against a run defense that ranked just 50th in rushing yards allowed per game. Tatum signee Qwa Peoples arrives as the lone new addition on the books, and how quickly he or an unnamed veteran claims the middle will decide whether Pete Rossomando's defense keeps tightening or backslides against the run.
A secondary that ranked 24th nationally in passing yards allowed per game (192) and 15th in yards per play allowed (5.10) now loses nine defensive backs, including tackle producers Kristian Pugh and Ronnie Hamrick. Pete Rossomando went to the portal to answer that exodus, landing corners Brennen Bailey (18 tackles at Massachusetts) and Ephraim Dotson (5 tackles at Rice) along with safety Devon Anderson, who posted 2 tackles and a TFL at Central Connecticut. Bailey projects as the early boundary answer, and with an experienced group still in the room, the passing defense that carried Lamar a year ago has the pieces to hold, even as the run defense at 50th in rushing yards allowed stays the softer edge to fix.
Ben Woodard's departure leaves a real void on special teams after he connected on 12 of 16 field goals, hit from 57 yards, and accounted for 66 points a season ago. Pete Rossomando has to sort out the placekicking job without a proven leg on record, and until a transfer arrival or unproven kicker proves he can hit from distance, Lamar's margin in close Southland games gets tighter. That kind of production is not easily replaced, and the shakiness could show up in the four-point wins that got Lamar to 8-5 last year.
Xavier Coleman's 542 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns walk out the door, and East Carolina transfer Parker Jenkins is the answer Lamar brought in to replace that load. His 256 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns at ECU were secondary production there, so scaling that up into a lead-back role for a Southland offense is the swing skill this team needs. If Jenkins can carry that workload, it also lightens the burden on Aiden McCown, who threw 6 interceptions against 10 touchdowns a year ago and needs a run game to lean on.
Lamar went 8-5 and 5-1 straight up at home, yet books have caught on: as a home favorite the Cardinals covered just once in four tries, a sign the number is already pricing in what this team does well. The disconnect flips on the road, where Lamar went 0-4-1 against the spread as an underdog despite a 3-4 straight-up mark, meaning bettors are better off fading Lamar as chalk than backing it as a road dog. Conference play is where the actual signal lives, a 4-2-1 cover mark that outpaces the overall numbers, and until the home-favorite trend breaks, that in-league form is the more reliable read for 2026.
