MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsSouthern · 7-5 last season · No. 42 in our FCS ratings
Western Carolina ranked 42nd in power rating despite a defense that gave up 33.5 points per game, 101st in scoring defense, which means the Catamounts stayed a top-five scoring offense away from turning close conference shootouts into losses.
Who replaces the 3,508 yards and 38 touchdowns Taron Dickens takes with him? Nobody on this roster has proven he can, and the 2025 numbers say the offense was living on fumes anyway, needing only 12.8 yards per point scored while a plus-7 turnover margin and a 4-3 mark in one-score games papered over the cracks. Expect the passing production to fall off hard and the record to follow it down, since the parts that made 7-5 possible were the least repeatable parts of the team.
The Cincinnati trip is a scheduling curiosity more than a real test, a 2% shot that exists mostly to cash a check before Western Carolina turns to the games that actually shape the season. Trips to Mercer and East Tennessee State are the ones that decide whether this projects as a 6-6 club or something better, both true toss-up territory against Southern Conference peers. A soft closing stretch against Wofford, The Citadel and a Chattanooga home date gives the Catamounts a real path to push past that projection if they handle the road tests first.

A 7-5 finish and 6-2 mark in league play landed Western Carolina a No. 42 power rating, a number that outstrips where most people slot a Southern Conference team. That kind of on-field results, winning six of eight in conference, is the story here heading into 2026, not any noise around the staff. The roster picture for next season is still filling in with transfers and signees who have not yet shown up in the data, but the foundation the coaching staff built in 2025 is the real headline.
Western Carolina's offense was a genuine national outlier last season, ranking 1st in passing yards per game and 2nd in total yards while the defense sat 117th in yards allowed, a gap that says everything about how this team wins. The formula worked anyway, with turnover margin at plus-7 and a defense that generated tackles for loss at a 22nd-ranked clip to bail out a unit giving up 6.40 yards per play. Nothing about the incoming or departed names changes that identity for 2026, the Catamounts will again try to outscore people through the air and hope the takeaways cover for a defense that still can't get off the field.
Taron Dickens is gone after throwing for 3,508 yards and 38 touchdowns against just 2 interceptions, the engine behind an offense that led the country in passing yards per game and finished fifth in scoring. That efficiency, a 46.1% third-down rate and 1.38 explosiveness mark among the country's better figures, was built on a downhill rushing attack ranked just 78th, so the passing game had to carry the load. Whoever takes over under center inherits a scheme that wants to throw first and often, and Western Carolina's ceiling in Southern play in 2026 rides on how closely that replacement can approach Dickens' production rather than lean on the ground game to bail him out.
Western Carolina's ground game was almost an afterthought last year, ranking 78th in rushing yards per game while the offense leaned on a passing attack that finished 1st nationally in yardage. Branson Adams (147 yards, 1 TD) and Jaiden Bond are both gone, but given how little the run game contributed to a 493-yard-per-game attack, the bigger question is whether anyone in the backfield needs to do more than complement the pass. With 138 rushing yards per game already a modest number to replace, an experienced offensive staff can keep feeding the same pass-first script that produced 38.6 points per game without needing a workhorse back to emerge.
The nation's top passing attack (356 yards per game) just lost the players who caught it. James Tyre (68 catches, 832 yards, 11 TD) and Malik Knight (47 catches, 774 yards, 7 TD) are both gone, along with Dominic Dutton and Painter Richards-Baker, stripping out the bulk of last year's production from a room that helped push Western Carolina to 493 total yards per game. Santana Carlos, Mouhamadou Mane and Davon Washington arrive with no prior stats on file, which means whoever wins targets has to prove it can replicate that volume rather than just fill a jersey.
Western Carolina's tight end production last season came almost entirely from Brayden Blackmon (27 catches, 213 yards, 2 TD) and Josiah Thomas (28 catches, 228 yards, 3 TD), both of whom are gone. That combined output has to be replaced by transfers rather than a returning name, with Charlotte transfer Jake Young (4 catches, 30 yards) the only incoming tight end with catches on his resume, alongside Warner University's Noah Lospinoso and Vanguard's Dylan Harris, who arrive without stats on file. The bigger cushion is the passing game around them, a unit that ranked 1st nationally in passing yards per game (356) and 2nd in total yards (493), which means Young does not need to replicate Blackmon or Thomas immediately to keep the offense humming.
The line that paved the way for the nation's No. 1 passing attack (356 yards per game) and a No. 2 overall offense (493 yards per game) has to be rebuilt almost entirely up front, with Brett Gray, Ilija Krajnovic, Elijah Collins and Manasseh Ripert all gone. Gardner-Webb transfer Aaron McIver arrives to fill an interior spot, but replacing four departures behind an offense that already ran the ball modestly (138 yards per game, 78th nationally) is the real test, not the passing numbers that room produced. If the ground game stays middling while a retooled front finds its footing, the burden shifts even more heavily onto the pass protection that made this offense elite in 2025.
A defense that gave up 6.40 yards per play and 277 passing yards per game a year ago, ranking 122nd against the pass, was never going to survive with the same faces up front, and now nine linemen from that group are gone entirely. Justin Wallace and the departed tackle duo of Jahleel Anderson and Sean Morris took only a handful of tackles between them, so the production lost is less about star power than sheer bodies, but the rush defense at 184 yards allowed still ranked 97th and needs more push than it got. Western Carolina's strength was keeping opponents off schedule at a 38.1% clip, 23rd nationally, and whoever fills these snaps up front will decide whether that discipline can offset a front that still bled 33.5 points a game.
Western Carolina's defense allowed 277 passing yards a game last season, 122nd nationally, and the linebacker corps did little to relieve that pressure, with Hayward McQueen Jr. and Jordan Thompson combining for all of six tackles between them before both departed alongside Armond Anderson. That production gap was never the problem, the issue was a defense giving up 6.40 yards per play (109th) and 461 total yards a game (117th) with linebackers barely showing up in the box score. The one bright spot, a defense that kept 38.1% of opponent plays on schedule (23rd nationally), suggests the scheme can work if whoever fills these three spots in 2026 tackles more like a linebacker than the names they are replacing.
A secondary that allowed 277 passing yards a game (122nd nationally) and 6.40 yards per play (109th) is getting a transfer-heavy makeover in the back end. Samaurie Dukes, who departed after posting 5 tackles and 2.5 TFL, and departed safety Zayveon Wells are gone, along with three other defensive backs, and Western Carolina replaces that group with Jermiyah Douglas and Andre Jackson Jr. at corner and Ja'Torian Mack at safety, all arriving via the portal. None carries prior statistics, so the coverage identity gets built fresh around them and an experienced secondary already on campus, with the 23rd-ranked rate of keeping opponents off schedule the foundation to build back from.
Christian Lowery's departure leaves a real void after he made both his field goal tries, including a 29-yarder, for 12 points last season. Long snapper Emmet Rhoades is also gone, so the Catamounts need to settle both specialist jobs without any incumbent production to point to. Western Carolina went 7-5 and 6-2 in the Southern with steady special teams underpinning that run, and finding a placekicker who can hold up in one-score conference games is the swing factor for 2026.
Western Carolina's season lives and dies on whoever takes over for Taron Dickens, who threw for 3,508 yards and 38 touchdowns against just 2 interceptions last fall. That kind of efficiency is nearly impossible to replicate, and with only five transfers arriving to offset sixteen departures, there is little proven insurance behind center. Charlotte transfer Jake Young gives the new quarterback a safety valve at tight end, but a passing attack that carried this team to 7-5 cannot survive a steep drop-off at the position that made it go.
Western Carolina's number is on the highway, not at home: a 5-1 straight-up mark away from Cullowhee with a 60% cover rate is a wildly different team than the 2-4 road show it puts on in its own building. Conference bettors caught on fast, pushing the Catamounts to a 71% cover rate in league play, and that split between home softness and road steel is the actual identity here, not the 7-5 finish. Fade the home-favorite spots where they're a coin flip against the number, and ride them once they leave the mountains.
