TJ Finley lands at Incarnate Word with a power rating of 33 overhead, and his ability to lift an offense that scored just 25.7 points per game a year ago will decide whether that number holds or falls.
Can TJ Finley, arriving from Georgia State, replace the 2,142 yards and 16 touchdowns EJ Colson took with him? The bet here is yes, since Finley steps in as the projected starter with FBS-level snaps already on his resume, a jump in experience Incarnate Word needs after a 5-7 season where its offense couldn't consistently finish drives. His arm talent should tilt more possessions into points, provided Killough builds the offense around what he does well rather than asking him to replicate Colson's exact profile.
Incarnate Word's projected 5-6 season lives or dies on a three-game stretch that has almost nothing to do with home comfort. Trips to Texas State (7% win), Stephen F. Austin (24%) and SE Louisiana (35%) form the real gauntlet, and losing all three would be no surprise given those numbers. The good news is the rest of the slate breaks favorably, with Northwestern State (87%) and Houston Christian (83%) at home offering the cushion this team needs to still finish around .500 after a middling 54th-ranked schedule.

Incarnate Word finished 5-7 and just 3-4 in Southland play, the kind of season that reads as a step back on the schedule sheet. But the power rating tells a different story, slotting the Cardinals at No. 33 nationally, a number that has nothing to do with a losing record built on close conference games. Clint Killough's roster is clearly more talented than last fall's results suggest, and 2026 is about whether that gap closes toward the ranking or the ledger.
The 5-7 record hides a team that beat itself: a -10 turnover margin and a 1-2 mark in one-score games are the kind of bounces that rarely repeat, and the league-game yardage margin already outpaced the actual conference win rate. Clint Killough's offense also left points on the field, needing 15.3 yards per point scored against a 13.9 league median, so the fix is conversion, not volume, with 246 passing yards per game already flowing through the air. TJ Finley arrives from Georgia State to run that offense, and if the turnovers and close-game bounces normalize as the numbers suggest they should, 2026 looks like a correction year more than a rebuild.
TJ Finley arrives from Georgia State to take over a passing attack that ranked 24th nationally in yards per game a year ago, and the fit matters because production, not scheme, is the question. Finley's own numbers at Georgia State (1244 yards, 6 TD, 7 INT) are shakier than what he's replacing, since EJ Colson threw for 2142 yards with 16 touchdowns against just 4 interceptions in 2025. Clint Killough inherits an offense that was efficient in chunks but explosive in almost none, ranking 98th nationally in explosiveness, so Finley's ceiling depends on whether he can turn that clean, low-sack protection (only 4 allowed) into the deep shots this group has lacked.
Incarnate Word's ground game produced just 147 yards per game on the way to a 25.7-point offense that leaned heavily on a passing attack ranked 24th nationally in yards per game. Damashja Harris arrives from Wyoming to change that math, though his 52 rushing yards there give little indication of what he adds here. The bigger issue is explosiveness: at 1.21 on successful plays, this offense ranked 98th nationally, and a run game producing more than short-yardage gains would ease the burden on the pass to carry every drive.
Incarnate Word's passing game was legitimately productive last season, 246 yards per game through the air, 24th nationally, but the two players who caught it are both gone, Jalen Walthall's 70 catches and Chedon James's 42 walking out the door together. Clint Killough turned to the portal for answers, landing Cedric Lott Jr. from Boston College and Price Morgan from Texas Tech, though Morgan's single catch for 12 yards at Texas Tech means neither arrival has shown he can replicate that volume. That gap between what left and what is proven to be walking in is the real swing factor for an offense that otherwise moved the ball at 393 yards per game.
Incarnate Word's passing game hummed to the tune of 246 yards per game through the air last fall, good for 24th nationally, but that ball rarely found the middle of the field for a chunk play, with the offense's explosiveness mark checking in at just 98th. That gap between steady completions and missing verticals down the seam is exactly where a tight end has to change the math. No tight end arrivals are confirmed in the current data, so Clint Killough's staff needs whoever settles in at that spot to turn short-area targets into the explosive plays this attack lacked in 2025.
Incarnate Word's line pushed out 147 rushing yards a game last season but its offense ranked 98th in explosiveness, a unit that moved the ball steadily without ever breaking one loose. Clint Killough now has to replace interior anchor Lawson Petty up front, a real subtraction from a group that already struggled to generate big plays at 5.23 yards per snap, 77th nationally. The passing game held up fine at 246 yards per game, so the fix here is about opening lanes and manufacturing explosive runs, not protection.
Incarnate Word's front held up against the run last year, allowing just 101 yards per game on the ground (4th nationally), but bled 243 through the air, a gap that points to a pass rush that never got home consistently. Coastal Carolina transfer Walt Gray arrives at edge to address that, though his 2025 line there of 5 tackles, 1 sack and 1 TFL was a bit-part role rather than a proven difference-maker. Clint Killough's defense finished 32nd in yards allowed per game, and holding that ranking depends on Gray or someone else in the room turning pressures into sacks that actually show up on the stat sheet.
The run defense was the identity of this front in 2025, holding opponents to 101 yards per game on the ground, a number few teams in the country matched. That strength held up even as the pass defense lagged well behind it, allowing 243 yards per game through the air, and closing that gap starts up front and at linebacker in run support translating into more pressure on quarterbacks. Clint Killough's group kept opposing offenses off schedule at a strong clip, and if that discipline in the front seven carries into 2026, Incarnate Word's defense stays the more reliable half of the roster while the secondary catches up.
The numbers here tell a split story: Incarnate Word's run defense was elite a year ago, 4th nationally in rushing yards allowed, while the pass defense lagged at 96th in yards allowed through the air. That gap is the whole offseason project, and it's why Ohio State transfer Bukari Miles Jr. matters even without a stat line to his name yet, a former Big Ten corner brought in to shore up a group that gave up 243 yards a game through the air. The overall defense still finished 32nd in yards allowed, so the floor is solid, but closing that pass-defense split determines whether 2026 looks like a step forward or another 5-7 split down the middle.
Will Faris took his leg out the door, and with it 12 of 14 field goals, a 57-yard long, and 72 points off the 2025 operation. Clint Killough now has to piece together placekicking from scratch without a proven name to hand the job to, which makes this the most unsettled group on the roster heading into 2026. Whoever wins the job inherits a specialist spot that was a quiet strength a year ago, not a liability to paper over.
Incarnate Word replaces EJ Colson's 2,142 yards and 16 touchdowns with Georgia State transfer TJ Finley, whose track record shows 1,244 yards, 6 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, a rate that has to tighten up for this offense to hold steady. Wyoming import Damashja Harris gives him a change-of-pace piece in the backfield, but the ground game brings only 52 rushing yards of proven production with him, so the passing game rests on Finley cutting down the mistakes that plagued his last stop.
Incarnate Word's 5-7 season split cleanly by venue for bettors, covering three of four home games while going 33% against the spread on the road, and that gap is the real signal heading into 2026 under Clint Killough. The conference-play number stands out more, a 4-2 cover mark despite a losing 3-4 record in Southland games, suggesting the Cardinals were competitive in spots the final score did not reflect. A perfect 0-2 mark as road underdogs is the outlier to watch, road value simply was not there last year, and until that flips, backing this team away from home stays the tougher play.
