Jaylon Tolbert takes full command of an offense that stalled at 24.3 points a game, and with only 54% of production returning around him and a power rating stuck at 103rd, Alcorn State's improvement in 2026 rides almost entirely on how fast he can build chemistry with the pieces still learning the system.
Can a defense that returns 60.6% of its production cover for an offense that just lost its entire backfield production to Reggie Davis' departure? That unit brings back more familiar faces than almost anything else on this roster, and it likely has to keep Alcorn in games early while Jaylon Tolbert and a rebuilt skill group find their footing. Expect the defense to be the steadier half of this team in 2026, simply because continuity favors it over an offense searching for answers.
The schedule ranks 120th in difficulty, but the number that matters is the trip to Southern Miss, a game the numbers give Alcorn State just a 2% chance to win. Cedric Thomas has more realistic swing games sandwiched around it, road trips to Prairie View A&M (25%) and North Alabama (32%) that look far more winnable and will do more to shape whether this program improves on last year's 5-7 mark. Home dates against Florida A&M (66%) and a neutral-site game with Arkansas-Pine Bluff (63%) offer the clearer paths to wins, but a projected 5-7 finish says this group still splits the coin-flip games more often than it should.

Cedric Thomas closed 2026 buildup off a 5-7 mark that undersold how competitive Alcorn State was inside the SWAC, finishing 4-5 against league opponents despite a national power rating that sits at No. 103. That gap between the modest overall number and a near-.500 conference slate is the real story here, this roster is more competitive within its own league than the outside numbers suggest. The path forward is simple in scope even if not in execution, turn those close conference results into wins rather than losses.
The 5-7 record hid a team that was actually trending up, going 0-4 in one-score games and getting outplayed by its own yardage margin in conference play, both things that tend to swing the other way. Jaylon Tolbert takes over an offense that ran the ball well (182 yards per game, 25th, with a 44.8% success rate, 25th) but couldn't hit explosive plays (123rd) or move the chains on third down (78th), so the passing attack around him has to create the splash plays the ground game alone won't. The defense is the sturdier half, ranking 29th in points allowed, and if Cedric Thomas gets even average turnover luck after a -3 margin last year, this program looks a lot better than 5-7 again in 2026.
Jaylon Tolbert's numbers on the card don't tell the quarterback story here, they tell a punter's, and that's the point. Alcorn State ran its offense last season with almost no passing production to speak of, just 176 yards a game through the air against 182 on the ground, so the 2026 job is really about whether Tolbert can turn a run-first attack that posted a 25th-ranked success rate into something with actual explosiveness after finishing 123rd in that department. The staff didn't stand pat waiting to find out, bringing in East Carolina transfer Raheim Jeter, and how quickly he pushes into the picture will decide whether this offense stays a ground-and-pound outfit or finally stretches the field.
Reggie Davis (839 rushing yards, 10 TD) and Jacorian Sewell (764 yards, 6 TD) did the heavy lifting for a rushing attack that finished 25th nationally in rushing yards per game, and neither is walking back into that backfield. Camren Stewart (108 yards) and Carl McDonald Jr. (91 yards) are the top returning ball-carriers by total, with Traylon Minor (34 yards) and Tylan Citizen (27 yards, 1 TD) in reserve, none of them close to replicating that lost production on their own. Cedric Thomas still has a run-first identity to lean on given last year's ground numbers, but the explosiveness that made those two departed backs so effective (123rd nationally) has to come from somewhere new in this room.
Omarion Blakes (34 catches, 256 yards) is the lone proven target left after Jarvis Rush's 42 grabs and Jacoby Matthews' 384 yards walked out the door, and that gap matters because Alcorn State's passing game already ranked 97th nationally in yards per game a year ago. Jamar Kaho (7-109-1) and Neico Sandifer (11-87) offer some experience underneath, but Elijah D'Oleo, Dylan Everett and Joshua Good bring no catch history to lean on. With a ground game that ranked 25th in rushing yards per game, expect Cedric Thomas to keep leaning on the run rather than ask an unproven receiving corps to carry a passing attack that was already a weak link.
Kole Williams' 4 catches were the only tight end production on the books last season, and even that modest total walks out the door, leaving Javian Foules, Kellon Mann, Cheikh Sall and TaRell Seals as unproven commodities with zero combined snaps of recorded output. That blank slate matters less than it might elsewhere, since Cedric Thomas leaned on the ground game anyway, with Alcorn State running for 182 yards per game (25th nationally) while the passing attack sat 97th. Whoever emerges among that quartet will be catching passes in an offense that ranked 123rd in explosiveness, so the bigger swing factor for 2026 is whether the tight ends can win on early downs to keep that third-down rate off 36.7%.
Cedric Thomas watched his line power a run game that hit 182 yards per game (25th nationally) and a 44.8% success rate, but the passing attack stalled at 176 yards and 97th nationally, with the offense ranking 123rd in explosiveness. Now the group that generated that ground push is gone entirely, with Ronald Brown, Rashawn Gallaspy, Magee Juan, Cameran Rogers and Tyrone Kelsey all departed. Whatever combination Thomas assembles up front inherits a run-first identity worth protecting and a passing game that still needs the line to buy more time than it did in 2025.
Alcorn State's front held up well enough in 2025, ranking 28th against the run and 32nd in yards per play allowed, but almost none of the personnel behind those numbers is back. Chris Walley, Jadyn Bost, Kaden Kenney, Olajahwon Harris and Tabias Hinton are all gone from a group that lost six linemen in total, wiping out the edge presence and interior depth that kept opponents off schedule at a 15th-ranked clip. Cedric Thomas has to find that same push from an experienced returning core and whoever the transfer portal brings in, because the passing-down number, 66th in yards allowed per game, shows the pass rush was already the softer half of this unit even before the exodus.
Tobias Hinton, whose 5 tackles topped this returning group, anchors a linebacker corps that has to answer for a defense that couldn't get off the field on schedule despite ranking 15th nationally in keeping opponents behind the chains. The tackle-for-loss production simply wasn't there in 2025, a unit that finished 79th in TFLs and 66th in sacks, and none of Jakel Houston-Irving, Dillon Crowell or Kenyen Mckanstry racked up more than 2 stops to suggest that changes in 2026. Mahamadou Diarra and Andre Duke arrive with no prior statistics on file, which means Cedric Thomas is banking on unproven pieces to generate the pressure this room never found last fall.
Alcorn State's secondary kept things largely in front of it last season, ranking 15th nationally in stays-on-schedule rate and 28th against the run, but the passing lanes were the soft spot at 66th in yards allowed per game. That's the bigger problem now that six defensive backs are out the door, including Bakari McCall and Orlandus McLaurin, along with Xavier Kately, Decorian Patton and Geoffery McKelton. Cedric Thomas is left leaning on an experienced secondary to hold the line-of-scrimmage discipline that worked in 2025 while figuring out who covers the pass-heavy problem that didn't.
Special teams was a quiet drain on a 5-7 team last season, and Cedric Thomas has no marquee transfer addition on this unit listed to change that math for 2026. Without a proven name to point to at kicker or returner, the Braves need whatever specialist emerges to simply stop handing opponents hidden field position, the kind of unglamorous fix that turns close SWAC games. That gap between close losses and a shaky kicking or return game is the real story here, not the win total itself.
Reggie Davis and his 839 yards and 10 scores are gone, and Camren Stewart, who managed just 108 yards a year ago, is the only proven ball-carrier left to pick up that load. Jaylon Tolbert's passing game has weapons in Omarion Blakes and Jamar Kaho, but if Stewart cannot turn into a between-the-tackles workhorse, Alcorn State's offense tilts entirely on Tolbert's arm with almost no cushion from the ground.
The number that matters is the split between Davis Wade Stadium... no, between Alcorn State's own gates and everywhere else: Cedric Thomas's club covers at an 80% clip at home (4-1 against the spread) but craters to 20% on the road (1-4), including a 25% mark as a road underdog. Conference play is where the value lives, a 6-3 against-the-spread mark despite going just 4-5 straight up in the SWAC, meaning bettors backing this roster in league games have gotten more than the scoreboard shows. Book the home number and stay away from Alcorn State on the road until that split changes.
