Tech's Race to Lose

Tennessee Tech sits as the clear favorite at No. 20 nationally, and the preseason math points straight to a rematch with Mercer, No. 24, in the title game. East Tennessee State (No. 34) lurks a tier below as the closest thing to a spoiler, while Western Carolina and Wofford, both projected 6-6 at No. 42 and No. 44, look built more for the middle of the pack than a run at the top two. This is not a wide-open league. Tennessee Tech and Mercer have separated themselves enough that the real drama is whether anyone below them can crash the title game rather than which of the two favorites gets there.

Mercer Leads, Depth Everywhere

Mercer's four picks top the preseason ballot, but the honor spreads unevenly enough to look more like a five-way tug than a coronation. Wofford stacks its backfield with both Ihson Jackson-Anderson and Gerald Modest, while The Citadel dominates the front seven with Josh Cole and Chris Benton up front plus Lee Alexander Jr. at linebacker. Furman answers with a safety pairing in AK Burrell and Billy Lewis alongside edge rusher Joshua Stoneking, and Collin Shannon gets the quarterback nod out of VMI over any Mercer or Samford arm. No single program owns both lines of scrimmage, which is the real signal here: this league's power is scattered position by position rather than concentrated in one roster.

No One Program Dominates

The Southern's returning-production crown is scattered across seven different programs, with Mercer the only school to grab more than one room, holding both tight ends behind Samuel Albee and linebackers behind Isaac Prince. VMI's Collin Shannon fronts the top quarterback room, while Wofford's Ihson Jackson-Anderson and Tennessee Tech's Gabe Nunez anchor the backfield and receiver spots respectively. Up front, Furman's Joshua Stoneking headlines the deepest returning defensive line, and Samford's Jalen Nelson leads the top secondary. That spread signals a league without a single loaded roster, where continuity at a specific position, not overall depth, decides who contends.
