Jared Lockhart inherits a scoring offense that finished 20th nationally and a defense that ranked 11th in points allowed, but with just 29% of last year's production back, the gap between an 22nd-place finish in the final Coaches Poll and a 43rd projection entering 2026 says this team is being rebuilt, not just reloaded.
Can Jared Lockhart operate an offense that returns just 35.3% of its production, and can a defense bringing back only 23.3% hold up long enough for him to learn on the job? Jackson State went 9-3 largely on pieces now gone, including Ahmad Miller's 1,035 rushing yards, so Lockhart inherits both the ball and the burden of replacing that production without much help around him. The defensive turnover is the bigger threat to another SWAC title push, since a unit rebuilding almost entirely from scratch is the harder gap to paper over than any freshman-quarterback growing pains.
Jackson State's ceiling in 2026 gets set on the road, not at home, with trips to Alabama State (36% win) as the clear low point on the slate, followed by Bethune-Cookman (60%) and Grambling (65%). A 124th-ranked schedule otherwise stacks favorable spots, including Southern (89%), Florida A&M (84%) and Mississippi Valley State (88%) at home, so T.C. Taylor's group should bank most of those. The projected 7-4 mark rests almost entirely on how Jackson State handles that Alabama State trip, since everything else on the board leans in its favor.

T.C. Taylor closed 2025 at 9-3 with a 7-1 mark in SWAC play, and the No. 43 power rating attached to Jackson State says that was no fluke against a soft schedule. This is a program that has stacked a winning season on top of legitimate national standing, not just conference wins that look good on paper. The floor for 2026 starts with a coach who has already proven he can beat the teams in front of him and rank well beyond the SWAC doing it.
Messiah Blair steps into a backfield that ran for 250 yards a game in 2025, second nationally, behind an offense that needed only 13.9 yards for every point scored, exactly the league median, a split that flattered Jackson State more than the box score shows. That efficiency, the 9-3 record, and a conference-play yardage margin that outran the actual win rate all point the same direction: this was a group living on the margins, not overwhelming people, and the passing game ranked just 65th in yards per game did little to offset it. T.C. Taylor's offense finished drives well enough to win the SWAC regular season, but the model reads this as buy-low bait rather than a repeatable formula heading into 2026.
Jared Lockhart takes the first-team reps into 2026 as the front-runner, but T.C. Taylor is not handing him the job outright after JaCobian Morgan's departure leaves 1179 yards and 10 touchdowns unaccounted for. Lockhart's own 1208 yards and 8 touchdowns last season came behind a run-first attack that ranked 2nd nationally in rushing and 9th in yards per play, so whoever wins the room inherits an offense built to protect its passer rather than lean on him. Ethan Terrell returns without a track record, and Vigor's Sammy Dunn and Venice's Darryon Jones arrive as unproven pieces in what stays a genuinely open camp battle behind Lockhart.
Jackson State ran for 250 yards a game last fall, second nationally, but the two backs who did the heavy lifting are both gone: Donerio Davenport (656 yards, 7 TD) and Travis Terrell Jr. (607 yards, 5 TD) combined for the bulk of that production and neither is back. What is left is largely unproven: Emari Matthews (42 yards, 3 TD) and Nate Blount IV (31 yards, 0 TD) have game snaps but no real workload history, while Trevon Evans and Jeremiah Wilson Jr. carry no prior statistics on file. T.C. Taylor added Li'Darious Pryor as a high school signee out of Evans, a three-star addition to a room that otherwise has to prove it can replicate last year's ground game with backs who have barely touched the ball.
Nate Rembert's 45 catches for 774 yards and 7 touchdowns anchor a room that has to replace Ja'Naylon Dupree's 6-touchdown season, and Jameel Gardner Jr.'s 32-catch, 445-yard mark makes this Rembert's and Gardner's group to run in 2026. Jackson State's passing game ranked just 65th nationally in yards per game even while the offense finished 9th in total yards and 2nd in rushing, a split that shows how much this attack has leaned on the ground game and how much untapped room Rembert and Gardner have to grow the air raid. Joanes Fortilien returns with modest volume, and unproven names like Amarion Brown, Jabari Jones and Cameron Onyebuagu give T.C. Taylor bodies to expand a passing attack that trailed its own rushing numbers last fall.
Jency Riley's 16 catches for 164 yards walk out the door, along with whatever Darren Bennett and Marvin Landy offered on the margins, leaving Sebastien Saint-Louis as the returning name at tight end with no numbers yet attached to him. Javar Bowden, a three-star signee out of Bay, joins the room as part of the incoming class rather than through the portal. Jackson State's offense does not need volume from this spot to hum, it ran for 250 yards per game (2nd nationally) and posted a 47.2% success rate (11th), so T.C. Taylor can let Saint-Louis and Bowden grow into the passing game instead of forcing production from day one.
The line that opened holes for 250 rushing yards a game, second-best nationally, loses that group almost entirely, with Quaveon Davis, Cameron James, Almetris Smith Jr., D'Andre Townes-Blue and Brian Williams Jr. among nine departures up front. Jaekwon Bouldin arrives from Mississippi State to plug a tackle spot, while Chadrick Windham signs in as a high school prospect out of Noxubee County to add interior depth. T.C. Taylor's ground game carried an offense that ranked 9th in yards per play, and how quickly Bouldin and the rest of this rebuilt front gel will decide whether that rushing identity survives the turnover.
A defense that ranked 11th nationally in rushing yards allowed per game (112) and 11th in keeping opponents off schedule now has to replace nearly its entire front, with 10 defensive linemen out the door including Quincy Ivory and Kazarius Bowie. T.C. Taylor went to the portal to answer that, landing edge Messiah Blair from Eastern Michigan and interior help in Terrance Hibbler Jr. from Mississippi State and Michael Johnson Jr. from Carver. None of the three arrive with gaudy 2025 stat lines, so the plan for 2026 is less about a single fix up front and more about restocking bodies around an experienced back seven that should keep the pass defense, 63rd in yards allowed per game, from being fully exposed while the new-look line finds its footing.
Jackson State's defense held opponents to 18.8 points a game and kept 112 rushing yards allowed in 2025, and none of that came from a name-brand linebacker corps, since Reid Pulliam, Ashton Taylor, Michael Robinson Jr. and Carmelo Jones are all gone with modest individual numbers to show for it. That gap between quiet stat lines and a top-15 rushing defense says the scheme and the front did the heavy lifting, which puts real weight on T.C. Taylor to keep that structure intact with new faces at the second level. Whoever settles in behind an experienced defensive front inherits a group that finished 27th in yards per play allowed, a number worth protecting more than replicating.
Jackson State's back end held up its end of a defense that ranked 11th nationally in points allowed and 11th in keeping opponents off schedule, but the tackle numbers tell the real story heading into 2026: none of the returning names, KJ Chisholm, Vernorrius Chaney, Mike Smith III, Jaylin Acker or Eric Hughes, produced much of a box-score footprint last fall. B.J. Washington and Shamar Hawkins, the two DBs who actually made plays with 9 and 8 tackles, are both gone, and that production has to come from somewhere else on the depth chart. Yusef Colding arrives out of St. Martin as a high school signee with no college stats yet, which means T.C. Taylor is banking on in-house growth from Chisholm and company more than a proven answer to replace what Washington and Hawkins did on the field.
Kye Collins is back after averaging 38.3 yards on 15 punts, giving Jackson State a settled leg in the field-position game T.C. Taylor leaned on during last year's 9-3 run. The bigger swing is at placekicker, where Gerardo Baeza's 8-of-13 clip and 61 points are gone, handing the job to Simon Naylor with no college kicks on record. Chris Levy returns at long snapper, so the operation around Naylor is at least familiar even as the scoring leg itself is a total unknown.
Jackson State loses Ahmad Miller's 1035 rushing yards, which shifts the load onto Jared Lockhart to turn last season's 1208 yards and 8 touchdowns into something bigger without the ground game bailing him out. He has Nate Rembert (45 catches, 774 yards, 7 TD) and Jameel Gardner Jr. (32 catches, 445 yards, 2 TD) both back outside, so the pieces are there for Lockhart to make this an air-first offense rather than one leaning on a replacement back.
Jackson State won nine games straight up, but backing Tigers at home cost bettors all year, an 0-3 mark against the spread that includes an 0-3 hole as a home favorite. The road tells the opposite story: T.C. Taylor's team covered four of five true away games, an 80% clip that made Jackson State a road number worth chasing even as the home line stayed untouchable. Conference play split the difference at 5-3 against the spread, but the divide between letting bettors down at home and cashing on the road is the number that defines this profile heading into 2026.
