MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsMEAC · Damon Wilson · 4-8 last season · No. 100 in our FCS ratings
Damon Wilson's roster returns less than half its production, which means the 100th-ranked outfit nationally is betting its floor on unproven pieces clicking faster than a typical rebuild allows.
Can John Griffith run an offense that returns just 50.1% of its production after Raymond Moore III's uneven 8-TD, 7-INT year? Griffith gets the first real shot at the job, and with the defense bringing back only 45.5% of its snaps, Morgan State's margin for a slow offensive start is thin. Expect growing pains early, but Griffith's familiarity with the program gives him the better shot at stabilizing the position by conference play.
The trip to Arizona State is a payday with zero realistic shot, and Damon Wilson's actual season gets defined by the two road games right after it: at Villanova (13% win) and at Towson (29% win), both winnable-on-paper MEAC-adjacent tests this roster projects as an underdog in. Home dates with Norfolk State (69%) and Howard (60%) look like the surer wins, but a schedule ranked 96th in difficulty means Morgan State has to actually cash those Villanova and Towson trips to move off last year's 4-8 mark. At North Carolina Central (30%) and at Delaware State (31%) round out a stretch where close-to-even games, not the Arizona State payday, decide whether 2026 looks any different.

Damon Wilson's 2025 closed at 4-8 overall and 1-4 in MEAC play, the kind of league record that erases margin for error in year-over-year evaluation. The No. 100 power rating reflects a program still finding its floor, not a staff that solved its problems last fall. Morgan State's 2026 case rests on turning conference near-misses into wins, since a repeat of that 1-4 league mark would read as standing still rather than building.
Morgan State's 4-8 mark hid a defense that held up against league opponents by a wide yardage margin the record never reflected, a sign the record undersold this group more than it flattered it. The offense got by on efficiency rather than explosiveness, ranking 102nd in explosiveness while still finishing 43rd in rushing yards per game, which means the ground game has to keep manufacturing points rather than counting on big plays. The defense was cheap to score on relative to its 344 yards allowed per game, so tightening that gap without inflating the yardage number would turn last year's close-game losses into 2026 wins.
John Griffith is the settled answer under center, even though his only 2025 line is 7 passing yards without a touchdown or interception. That thin sample matters less than what it replaces: Kobe Muasau's 824 yards and Raymond Moore III's 878 yards and 8 touchdowns are both out the door, taking almost all of Morgan State's proven passing production with them. Josiah Bushnell adds a run-game wrinkle behind Griffith off 50 rushing yards and a score, but this offense, which managed just 159 passing yards per game a year ago, now leans on Griffith to be more than a change-of-pace arm.
Randall Nauden ran for 558 yards and 5 touchdowns and comes back as the clear centerpiece of a Morgan State ground game that ranked 43rd by getting to 167 yards per game on the ground last season, even with a passing attack stuck at 111th. Jason Collins Jr. and his 363 yards are gone, but Dorian Harris (233 yards), Keith Jenkins Jr. and Dae'Jeaun Dennis (99 yards apiece) all return to spread the load, and Shepherd transfer Jordan Barnett adds another body to a room that already leans on Nauden. With the passing game lagging, Damon Wilson's offense has every reason to keep feeding Nauden and let the run carry the possession battle in 2026.
Justin Perry's 22 catches for 405 yards and 5 touchdowns were the most efficient production in this room, and he returns as the clear vertical threat in an offense that finished 111th in passing yards per game. Malique Leatherbury (31-310-2) and Joseph Kennerly Jr. (24-241-1) give Morgan State a trio with real reps together, which matters more than raw numbers given how little the passing game stretched the field last year, evident in an offense that ranked 102nd in explosiveness. The bigger issue is scheme, not personnel: a run-heavy attack that leaned on 167 rushing yards per game needs Perry and Leatherbury to turn short, low-value catches into the explosive plays this passing game has been missing.
Joshua Smith's 11 catches and 2 touchdowns were the only real juice this group produced in 2025, and with Matt Lowe's 6 catches and lone score gone, Smith is the clear focal point again. Alex Simmons adds a reliable underneath option off his 7 catches for 55 yards, while Treston Davis and Tyreek Wood return without stats attached, leaving Damon Wilson to lean on Smith to carry the position group in an offense that ranked 111th in passing yards per game. Given how little the passing attack stretched the field last year (102nd in explosiveness), Smith's routes over the middle may end up as the closest thing Morgan State has to a big-play answer.
Morgan State's ground game held up fine last season, 167 yards per game on the ground (43rd nationally), but the passing attack behind that same front managed only 159 yards per game (111th) and the offense as a whole cracked 5.05 yards per play just 89th in the country. That imbalance now has to survive without both starting guards, Treyvon Branch and Jerrod Burrell, plus interior and tackle pieces Daniel Casillas Jr., Tyler Thomas and Kahari Finley all out the door. Damon Wilson's staff gets an experienced backfield room to lean on, but the pass protection that already ranked near the bottom third of the country now rests on whichever combination replaces five departed starters up front.
Morgan State's front held up well enough last year, ranking 26th in rushing yards allowed and 43rd in yards per play, but the production that anchored it is gone, with Blanche Gold's 11 tackles and 2 TFL, Chris King's 5 tackles and Jordan Jeudy all off the roster. That leaves Damon Wilson needing an experienced defensive front to hold its rushing numbers steady without the names who did the dirty work in 2025. The bigger concern is a pass defense that finished 60th in passing yards allowed, and any slippage up front would make that number worse before it gets better.
Production at linebacker walks out the door with Jianni Woodson-Brooks, Arturo Mattocks and Erick Hunter, who combined for the bulk of the tackle production in a front that still finished 18th in tackles for loss and 26th against the run. Dylan Davis and Martavian Davis are the only names back with any stat line to speak of, modest as it is, while Antwann Dos Santos Jurado, Kayden Harris, Keith Joseph-Clark and Nasir Smith all return without prior numbers attached. West Virginia transfer Mike Hastie adds a body with Power Four experience, but the group that has to protect a defense allowing 344 yards a game is mostly unproven on paper.
A secondary that held opponents to 213 passing yards per game and 344 total yards allowed, good for 35th nationally, loses its top production all at once. Hiroshi Carr's 12 tackles and Jadon Carter's work at safety are gone, along with three more defensive backs, six departures total from a group that kept Damon Wilson's defense on schedule only 42.1 percent of the time opponents snapped it. The pass defense numbers were solid relative to the run defense at 131 yards allowed per game, and an experienced secondary returns to build around, but replacing that much tackle production in the back end without a clear incoming name is the real question for 2026.
Morgan State has two kickers with real 2025 tape, and the split tells its own story: Alex Amaya hit 4 of 6 field goals with a long of 37, while Sahr Gbundema went 2 of 3 with a 38-yarder, meaning Damon Wilson has options rather than an unknown at the position. Shane Messenger returns after a 21-punt, 37.4-yard average season, giving the coverage units a steady leg to plan around, and long snapper Griffin Dorman is back to anchor the operation even without a stat line to his name.
Morgan State's ground game is the swing factor, and Randall Nauden is the one who has to shoulder it after piling up 558 yards and 5 touchdowns behind an offense that turned drives into points efficiently but has to prove that wasn't a mirage. Dorian Harris gives Nauden a running mate with 233 yards of his own, which matters more this year with a raw, unproven arm at quarterback and 878 passing yards gone with Raymond Moore III. Lean on the run enough and this team's yardage margin against MEAC foes, which already beat its record last season, finally shows up in the win column.
Morgan State went 4-8 on the field but 5-4 against the number, and the profile that matters is the bounce back: bettors who backed Damon Wilson's group the week after a loss cashed at an 80% clip (4-1). That resilience showed most at home, where the Bears covered 67% of the time despite a 2-3 mark on the scoreboard, and as road underdogs, where they also covered 67%. The disconnect between the losing record and the steady covers points to a team that keeps games closer than the final score suggests, especially with a spread in hand.
