MVFC 2026 Season Preview

North Dakota's Race to Lose

North Dakota sits atop the league at No. 3 nationally, and the gap to the pack behind it is the story here. Illinois State, Southern Illinois and South Dakota State all land within a few spots of each other at No. 6, No. 7 and No. 8, which reads as a genuine three-way scramble for the second finals berth rather than a settled pecking order. South Dakota and Youngstown State sit further back at No. 12 and No. 13, close enough to crash that conversation if any of the top three stumbles. Our projected title game pairs North Dakota with Illinois State, but Southern Illinois and South Dakota State have every case to be the ones standing there instead.

Illinois State's Loaded Roster

Illinois State's seven selections dwarf the rest of the league, and the haul is built on the back end: linebackers Tye Niekamp, Dexter Niekamp and Solomon Oduma anchor the front seven alongside defensive backs Shadwel Nkuba II and La'Shavion Brown, with Dylan Lord and Luke Mailander giving the offense its receiving punch. Youngstown State counters with the league's top skill-position combo, quarterback Beau Brungard pairing with running back Jaden Gilbert, plus lineman Conlan Greene up front on defense. Murray State is the only other program with multiple picks, landing linebacker Keyaan Abdul-Rahim and cornerback Bryan Pulley, while North Dakota, South Dakota State, Southern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Indiana State and South Dakota each get a single representative. That spread signals a league with one clear top-heavy power in Illinois State but real difference-makers scattered across nearly every roster.

Talent Spread Thin

No single MVFC roster dominates the league's best position rooms, and that spread is the story. Illinois State is the closest thing to a hub, holding the top returning group at both linebacker with Tye Niekamp and defensive back with Shadwel Nkuba II, two of the conference's seven position-room crowns. Everywhere else the depth is scattered by design, Youngstown State builds around Beau Brungard at quarterback, Southern Illinois around Edward Robinson at running back, North Dakota around receiver B.J. Fleming, South Dakota State around tight end Greyton Gannon, and Northern Iowa around defensive lineman Jamarion Augustus. That leaves Illinois State as the only program with a genuine positional identity on both sides of the ball while the rest of the league leans on one signature returner apiece.
