Reagan Andrew returns nearly his entire supporting cast at 92 percent production, so Kevin Lynch has no excuse if Butler's offense stays stuck in the high 70s nationally in scoring instead of finally matching a defense that already sits mid-pack at 49th.
Can Reagan Andrew carry Butler's offense through a full season as the projected starter? With 92.2% of offensive production back, the pieces around him return intact, but Charlie Spegal and his 210 rushing yards are gone, meaning Andrew likely has to do more through the air rather than lean on a ground game that just lost its lead back. The bet here is Andrew handles it, since an offense that returns this much talent rarely needs a full rebuild, just a quarterback who does not have to do it alone.
The season turns on a three-game gauntlet that decides whether Butler is competitive in the Pioneer or scrambling for wins elsewhere: a trip to Montana State that looks close to unwinnable, then road tests at Drake and Presbyterian where Butler is an underdog in both. Sandwiched around that stretch are the games Kevin Lynch's team actually needs to win, home dates with San Diego and Dayton and a road trip to Valparaiso, all closer to toss-ups or better. With a schedule ranked 109th in difficulty, the margin for Butler comes down to cleaning up those winnable middle-tier matchups rather than stealing anything from the Montana State trip.

Butler split its conference slate at 4-4 and finished 6-6 overall, the kind of even-keeled year that raises no alarms and settles nothing either. The power rankings still peg Kevin Lynch's program at 92nd nationally, a reminder that treading water in the Pioneer isn't the same as climbing it. Nothing about 2025 forces a change in direction for Lynch, but nothing about it points to a jump in 2026 without something on the roster actually improving.
Butler's offensive identity is already settled and it runs through the ground game, not Reagan Andrew's arm. The rushing attack ranked 38th nationally in yards per game a year ago while the passing game sat at 100th, and Andrew's return (1,348 yards, 10 TD, 5 INT) means 2026 is a bet that a run-heavy formula with better third-down efficiency (28th) can offset an explosiveness problem that ranked 110th. That gap between moving the chains and hitting chunk plays is the real story here, not the 6-6 record, and until Andrew or the backs start creating explosive plays instead of steady ones, Butler's ceiling stays capped even if the floor holds.
Reagan Andrew's 1,348 yards came with 10 touchdowns against 5 interceptions, and his return is the one piece of stability for an offense that finished 100th in passing yards per game and 110th in explosiveness. Butler ground out its production on the ground instead, ranking 38th in rushing yards per game, so the ceiling on 2026 depends on whether Andrew can turn that efficient third-down offense (28th nationally) into more explosive plays through the air rather than leaning on the run to carry an offense that scored just 22.8 points per game. Jarrin Alley's 252 yards give Kevin Lynch a proven backup option, but this is Andrew's offense to unlock.
Griffin Caldwell is the workhorse here, his 362 yards last season dwarfing every other back on this roster, and Butler needs that gap to close some for the ground game to hold up as the identity of this offense. The rushing attack was the one respectable piece of a middling attack, sitting 38th nationally in rushing yards per game even while the passing game languished at 100th, so the run has to carry the offense again. Charlie Spegal's 210 yards are gone, but Ershod Jasey II (70 yards) and Keaton Jones give Kevin Lynch bodies with game reps behind Caldwell, while Michael Dellumo, Jerel Rhodes II and Zac Willingham-Davis arrive without a rushing snap on record. Butler's offense ranked just 110th in explosiveness, so the difference between last year's 6-6 finish and a step forward may come down to whether Jasey or Jones can turn a few of Caldwell's carries into the chunk plays this offense has not found.
Ethan Loss was the only real volume target in 2025, hauling in 54 catches for 639 yards while Butler's passing game stalled at 100th in the country. The supporting cast returns nearly intact, with Nick Munson, Archie Cox and Chet Yardley all back after modest but real production, and Archie Cox's 2 touchdowns on just 14 catches hint at big-play ability that Butler's offense badly needs given a 110th-ranked explosiveness mark. Kevin Lynch's attack still ran through the ground game last year, but if this passing offense climbs out of the bottom third nationally, it will be because Loss gets more help and someone behind him turns those short catches into chunk plays.
Brady Preston's 4 touchdowns on just 8 catches were the most efficient stat line in this room, and now he's the clear centerpiece after Cameron Heald's 23 grabs and Ethan Malafa's contributions both leave campus. Gage Goralski, Cole Kreuzer, Keith Long Jr., Barrett Schmidlkofer and Drew Sullivan all return without a catch on record, so Preston is the only proven receiving option for a passing game that ranked 100th in yards per game and 110th in explosiveness. Kevin Lynch leaned on a 169-yard rushing attack last year, and until one of those unproven tight ends emerges as a second target, this stays a run-first group with Preston as its only trusted weapon.
Butler's ground game hummed at 169 yards per game (38th) behind a line that now loses Jason Hicks and Otto Weight, so the identity of the run game gets tested before the passing attack does, given the offense already ranked 100th in passing yards per game. Wyatt Bakker, Cameron Beiswenger, Nik Belski, Eric Bower and Kevork Buchaklian headline the returning group up front, but with no snap counts on record, Kevin Lynch cannot simply pencil last year's push back in. The bigger flag is explosiveness, 110th nationally, a number that traces straight to the trenches and needs to jump for Butler's offense to move past 81st in total yards.
Kevin Lynch loses five of last year's defensive linemen, including Kwame Achampong, Trey Alsbrooks and Danny Orgler, off a front that actually held up well, yielding just 135 rushing yards per game (36th nationally) and 335 total yards per game (22nd). That production has to come from Nathan Ash, Okemdi Eze, Dantu Gardner Jr., Graham Gilmartin, Luke Green and Dawson Hubbard, six returning bodies with no prior statistical track record to point to. The bigger concern is what already leaked through that solid raw-yardage number, a 5.86 yards-per-play mark that ranked only 73rd, and until one of those six starts stuffing schedule-down plays, that per-snap bleed is the more honest read on this group than the yardage totals suggest.
Tommie Aberle, Mason Armstrong, Zach Beitler, Ben Brandenburg, Tommy Diamond and Payton Foley all return to a front seven that held opponents to 135 rushing yards per game, 36th nationally, and 335 total yards per game, 22nd nationally, in 2025. None of the six carry prior tackle numbers on file, so the production Tyson Garrett, Jeremiah Jackson and Brayton Spetter took with them is unaccounted for on paper even though the same names populate the depth chart. The bigger question for Kevin Lynch's defense is the 5.86 yards per play allowed, 73rd nationally, a number this group of returners needs to bring down for the run-stopping identity to actually translate into wins.
Butler's secondary held up its end last season, allowing just 199 passing yards per game (34th nationally) even as the defense overall settled for a middling 73rd in yards per play allowed. That efficiency returns largely intact behind Kameron Armstrong, Nick Cloyd, Eric Csala, Peyton Daniels and Jack Davis, none of whom have individual stats on file but all of whom were part of a group that kept opponents off schedule less than half the time. With Adam Cipriano, Will Mason and Onye Onuoha gone, Kevin Lynch is banking on that returning volume to hold the pass defense steady while the run defense, 36th against the ground game, carries the rest of the load.
Ryan Short quietly gave Butler one of the steadiest legs in the league, hitting 15 of 16 field goals with a long of 45 and 66 points, and his return means Kevin Lynch does not have to think twice about who kicks in close games. Beck Janki, by contrast, missed his only attempt and adds little proven juice behind him, while Sam Taglia and long snapper Max Thompson carry no statistical track record yet. The operation still runs through Short, and as long as he stays healthy this is a strength, not a question mark, for 2026.
Butler's season swings on whether Reagan Andrew can turn last year's 1348 yards and 10 touchdowns into fewer of the 5 interceptions that dogged him, and Ethan Loss is the man who makes that possible. With Charlie Spegal's 210 rushing yards gone and Griffin Caldwell the lone proven ball carrier at 362 yards, the ground game will not bail out mistakes, so Loss, coming off 54 catches for 639 yards, has to be the safety valve that keeps Andrew's decisions clean and the offense moving through the air.
Butler's betting card is a study in split personality rather than an edge either way. As a road underdog the club covered 3-2, a live number worth chasing, but as a home favorite it went 0-2 against the spread, meaning Kevin Lynch's group has been a trap when Vegas expects it to handle business. The bigger red flag for 2026 backers is the week after a loss, where Butler covered just 1-4, suggesting this team does not respond well and bettors should be wary of buying in off any defeat.
