MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsSouthern · Shawn Watson · 6-6 last season · No. 45 in our FCS ratings
Shawn Watson's Terriers ranked No. 45 with a defense that held opponents to 17.3 points per game, so the ceiling for 2026 rests entirely on whether Fayard can drag an offense that managed just 22.8 points per game up closer to that level.
Who fills the void Isaiah Scott leaves at receiver? With 89.6% of offensive production back around Fayard, the answer is likely a committee of returning skill players absorbing those targets rather than any single newcomer replacing him outright. That depth, not a lone successor, is why the passing game should hold steady even with its top target gone.
Ole Miss on the road is a payday, not a projection, a game the numbers give Wofford zero shot to win. The real evidence on this schedule comes at Kent State, a true toss-up-turned-underdog spot at 22 percent, and at home against Tennessee Tech, a near coin flip at 42 percent that will say more about Shawn Watson's team than the Power Four trip ever could. A 6-6 forecast against the No. 35 slate means Wofford's margin lives in those two games plus the eight-plus-percent tests against Elon and Western Carolina, both dead-even at 44 percent.

Shawn Watson's Terriers finished a break-even 6-6, but that flattens what actually happened in league play, where Wofford went 5-3 and the underlying power rating (No. 45) is stronger than a .500 record suggests. The gap between that national standing and the even record is the real 2026 storyline, this looks more like a team that left wins on the table than one that overachieved to get to six. Watson's group enters with a foundation that outranks its record, and closing that gap in conference play is the swing factor for where this season actually lands.
Wofford's 6-6 season was built on the league's stingiest scoring defense (17.3 points allowed, 3rd nationally) and a rushing defense that held up at 107 yards allowed per game, while the offense stalled at 115th in success rate and 113th on the ground. J.T. Fayard returns as the settled starter after throwing for 1,471 yards and 13 touchdowns against just 3 interceptions, and that efficiency has to translate into more explosive, sustained drives if 2026 is going to look different. The formula worked once behind a +11 turnover margin, but Wofford cannot keep leaning on defense and turnovers to mask an offense stuck near triple digits nationally in yards per game.
J.T. Fayard threw for 1,471 yards and 13 touchdowns against just 3 interceptions in 2025, and that clean ratio is the reason Wofford's passing game can carry more weight in 2026 even as the rest of the offense stalled. The Terriers ranked 115th in success rate and 113th in rushing yards per game, which means Fayard's efficiency was propping up an attack that could not consistently move the ball on the ground. With Jayden Whitaker, Ethan Drumm and a healthy stable of backups behind him, Shawn Watson does not need a training-camp answer at quarterback, just more support around the one he already has.
Ihson Jackson-Anderson and Gerald Modest form a legitimate one-two punch, combining for 610 and 575 rushing yards a year ago, yet Wofford's rushing attack still finished 113th in rushing yards per game and the offense as a whole ranked 115th in success rate. That gap between the backfield's production and the line's output around it is the real story for 2026, since both Jackson-Anderson and Modest return alongside Isaiah Nell. Shawn Watson also lands Davis Penn, a three-star signee out of Southlake Carroll, adding a high school prospect to a backfield that needs the blocking in front of it to catch up to the ball-carriers already in the room.
Ivory Aikens is the one proven weapon in this passing game, and his 37 catches for 497 yards and 6 scores now carry more weight with Isaiah Scott's 558 yards gone to departure. Colby Alexander, C.J. Adams and Terrance Honeywood all return with modest but real production, giving Shawn Watson a group of complementary pieces rather than a true second option to pair with Aikens. That gap shows up in the numbers: an offense stuck at 34.0% success rate (115th) and 186 passing yards per game (88th) needs one of those returners to take a real step forward, and Aikens' target share says the passing attack still runs through him alone.
Matt Flanders is the one proven target here, his 15 catches for 92 yards the most production any tight end brings back after Samuel Cornett's four grabs walked out the door. Jaden Fowler and Jack Ewell add modest receiving numbers, but the bigger question sits with Isaiah Haithcock, Will Maisenbacher and Harry Newton, none of whom have a catch on record, plus incoming T.L. Hanna product Walker Kelley, who arrives with no college stats to lean on. Wofford's offense stalled at a 34.0% success rate and 290 yards a game in 2025, and until Flanders gets more help underneath, Shawn Watson's passing attack still runs through the receivers before it runs through this room.
Wofford ran for just 104 yards a game and cracked a 34.0% success rate last season, numbers that trace straight back to a line losing four contributors in Quincy Hughes, Mason Howard, Luke Moise and Chizara Alegbe. Kendrell Chambers, Nathanael Cole, Ben Diedrich, Landon Harris and Clayton Hixon are the names Shawn Watson has back up front, and how much of that group actually started last fall determines whether this unit repeats 2025's struggles or turns a corner. App State transfer Moritz Schmoranzer arrives to add interior depth, while Drew Scaggs joins as a high school signee at tackle, but with that much turnover in the room, treat 2026 as a rebuild up front until the results say otherwise.
Wofford's front held up its end last season, anchoring a defense that allowed just 107 rushing yards per game (6th nationally) and 4.84 yards per play (10th) while the points allowed mark (17.3, 3rd) made Shawn Watson's group one of the stingiest in the country. None of that production came from name-brand tackle numbers up front, though: Seth Foster, Caleb Oliver, O'marion Brown and Brandon Maina all depart without gaudy stat lines, meaning the run-stopping identity that made this defense so hard to move has to be rebuilt without the personnel that actually built it. The passing-down issue is separate and lingering, 244 yards allowed through the air (99th) suggests the line's push mattered more against the run than the pass, and that gap is exactly what carries over into 2026.
Wofford's defense held opponents to 17.3 points a game and just 107 rushing yards a game, a front seven that stayed disciplined enough to keep 37.6 percent of opponent plays from getting on schedule. None of that production graduated with a name attached, since Jalen Rambert, Nick Morgan and Benny Radicia all logged minimal tackle totals, so the linebacker room isn't losing a headline producer so much as its collective experience. Palmer Flake arrives from Chapin to add a body to that rotation, and the real swing factor for 2026 is whether Shawn Watson's scheme can keep that same rush-defense identity with less proven depth at the position.
Wofford's secondary held up its end last season, allowing just 17.3 points a game even as the pass defense gave up 244 yards per game (99th nationally), a split that points to a group that tightened in the red zone but leaked yardage between the 20s. That's the problem Shawn Watson is patching with four incoming defensive backs, cornerbacks Kevin White and Tyson Stroud plus Ky'ree Murphy, and safety Marek Marcellus, all arriving to push an experienced secondary rather than replace it outright. With the departures of Maximus Pulley and Darius Malcolm Jr. thinning the tackle production at the position, the bet for 2026 is that added competition on the outside finally closes the passing-yardage gap that undercut an otherwise stout run defense.
Maddox Cowart handled 29 punts at a 39.9-yard clip and is back to anchor the specialists, but the bigger question is who kicks field goals now that Cavan Craig, the punter who logged 45 boots at 41.9 yards, is gone from that job mix entirely and Bridger Jones has also departed. Devery Cagle and Connor Deviney return with almost no track record between them, 0 of 0 and 0 of 1 on field-goal tries, so Wofford is essentially auditioning a kicker in games rather than trusting one. That uncertainty, more than any snapper question with Sam Aschbrenner, Joshua Hodge and Seabrook Kellett all back, is what will decide whether close Southern Conference games swing Wofford's way in 2026.
J.T. Fayard threw for 1,471 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, and with Isaiah Scott's 558 receiving yards gone, Wofford's passing game leans on Ivory Aikens' 37 catches and 6 scores to fill that void. But the real swing factor is the ground game Fayard hands off to: Ihson Jackson-Anderson (610 yards) and Gerald Modest (575 yards, 5 TD) both return, and with a 160-ranked recruiting class and almost no portal help arriving, Wofford's offense has to run through that duo rather than ask Fayard or a thin receiver room to do it alone.
Wofford went just 6-6 straight up, but bettors who backed the Terriers cashed at an 83% clip against the spread, a gap that says the number never caught up to Shawn Watson's team last fall. The market seemed to punish Wofford for its record rather than its performance, especially on the road, where a losing 2-4 mark still produced an 83% cover rate and a perfect mark as road underdogs. Expect books to overcorrect into 2026, and expect Wofford to keep making them pay for it.
