Campbell's ceiling in 2026 rests less on Sixkiller and more on whether Braxton Harris can drag a defense that leaked 35.8 points a game up from 109th in scoring defense, because another season like that erases whatever ground the offense gains.
Can a defense returning just 35.1% of its production hold up while Sixkiller and the offense carry 64.8% continuity into 2026? The gap between those two numbers is the real fault line, not the quarterback spot, and it points to a unit that has to replace nearly two-thirds of its snaps with unproven pieces. Expect the offense to outpace a defense still finding its identity, especially early in the season.
The trip to Florida is a money-game formality, but the real season lives in a string of coin-flip road tests. Campbell projects as a near-underdog at East Tennessee State and at Elon, two games inside a slate ranked 65th for difficulty, and how Braxton Harris navigates those swings decides whether 2026 looks better than the 4-8 projection. The forgiving stretch comes at home, where North Carolina A&T and a manageable Hampton trip offer the clearest paths to building on last year's 2-10 finish.

Braxton Harris watched Campbell go 2-10 overall and 2-6 in the CAA in 2025, results that line up with a power rating stuck at 93rd nationally. The record and the underlying number tell the same story here, a program with real ground to make up in league play rather than one that overachieved or underachieved its talent. For 2026, the plain task in front of Harris is stacking better conference results than the two league wins Campbell managed a year ago.
Kamden Sixkiller returns after throwing for 2,154 yards and 12 touchdowns, and the passing game itself was respectable enough (51st in passing yards per game). The real drag was everything around him: the offense ranked 108th in explosiveness and 90th in yards per play, meaning drives stalled even when Sixkiller found completions. The bigger issue for 2026 sits on defense, which allowed 35.8 points per game and ranked 121st against the pass with zero recorded sacks a year ago. Campbell does not need Sixkiller to be different, it needs a defense that can get off the field so his passing numbers translate into wins instead of shootout losses.
Kamden Sixkiller threw for 2,154 yards and 12 touchdowns against just 5 interceptions in 2025, and he heads into 2026 as the settled starter on an offense that finished 108th nationally in explosiveness. That gap is the story: Sixkiller took care of the ball fine, but Campbell's 24.7 points per game and 5.04 yards per play speak to a unit that couldn't create chunk plays behind him. With Mike Chandler II and Jalen Ferguson both gone, Sixkiller now owns the room outright, and if Braxton Harris wants more than 64th-ranked scoring, the answer is unlocking explosive plays with the same passer, not searching for a new one.
JJ Cowan's 544 yards and 8 touchdowns give Campbell a legitimate lead back, and Ethan Lawrence's 356 yards behind him means the top of this room is intact even as Naieem Kearney's 219 yards and 3 scores walk out the door. The bigger issue isn't personnel, it's what happened behind the line, a 135 rushing-yard average that ranked 80th nationally and an explosiveness mark of 1.18, 108th in the country, that capped every successful run before it could turn into a chunk play. Cowan and Lawrence carrying the load again in 2026 only pays off if Campbell's blocking creates more room than it did in a 2-10 season.
Randall King's 59 catches for 689 yards and 5 touchdowns walk out the door, and nobody left in the room comes close to replacing that kind of production on paper. Trayjen Llanas-Wilcox (22 catches, 367 yards) becomes the clear top target by default, with Parker Jones and Stevie Keener filling in around him, but that trio combined didn't match King's yardage total alone last season. East Carolina transfer Jyron Waiters arrives with modest numbers of his own (6 catches, 69 yards), which won't fix an offense that ranked 108th in explosiveness and 90th in yards per play, a passing attack that was already middling at 51st nationally now has less firepower to work with, not more.
Trevor Wilson's 22 catches and 193 yards walk out the door, leaving Dawson Adams-Grenier as the only tight end with a real 2025 track record, and his 5 catches for 55 yards and a score barely register against what Campbell needs from the position. Brady Ambrose caught one pass, while Cion Kelly, Adam McIntosh, John Mark Shaw and Chase Wilkens carry no statistical history into 2026, so this group is unproven by any measure. That vacuum matters most on early downs, where an offense already 108th nationally in explosiveness and 80th in rushing yards per game could use a tight end who forces the issue as a blocker or safety valve, and right now nobody in this room has shown he can be that.
Four linemen who helped push Campbell to a 90th-ranked yards-per-play offense and a 108th-ranked explosiveness mark are out the door, with Dante Jones, Jack O'Connor, Zy'Terrio Lee and Freddie Pelling all departed. Kirk Abbott, Ashton Allman, Carver Banker, Luke Bledsoe and Jayden Colvin are back to try to fix a group that couldn't create explosive plays or push the ball on the ground (135 rushing yards per game, 80th nationally), but with none of the four losses replaced by a proven name, Braxton Harris is piecing this front together from the returners on hand rather than banking on continuity.
Braxton Harris watched a defense give up 274 passing yards a game a year ago, a number that ranked 121st nationally and points to a pass rush that never got home. The run front held up relatively well at 138 yards allowed per game, 40th nationally, but none of that production returns by name, with A'mari Wilson's 5 tackles and Raymond Macias's 3 the most production walking out the door. Fixing the pressure problem, not the run fits, is the actual job in front of this line in 2026.
Braxton Harris watched his linebacker corps get shredded through the air last season, and the numbers explain why: a defense that gave up 274 passing yards per game and 6.33 yards per play sat among the worst marks in the country. None of that group returns by name, with the entire tackle-leading tandem of Kiersten Lee and Tyrek Brown among seven linebackers now gone. The run defense actually held up fine at 138 yards allowed per game, so whoever fills these spots inherits a front that can still stop the ground game, provided it can finally match up in coverage.
A pass defense that bled 274 yards a game through the air, 121st nationally, is the reason Braxton Harris went shopping for safeties instead of hoping for internal fixes. O'Marion Lewis (East Carolina) and Kareem Williams (Coastal Carolina) arrive to reset a secondary that lost six defensive backs, including tacklers Jojo Pace and Donavan Philord and both corners in Brandon Guzman and Markeece Alexander. The run defense held up at 40th in rushing yards allowed, so if Lewis and Williams stabilize the back end quickly, this unit's floor is higher than last year's 412 total yards per game suggested.
Alex Crabb is the answer here, having connected on 14 of 18 field goals with a long of 46 and 75 points last season, giving Campbell a steady leg even as the rest of the two-win team struggled. The name overlap on departed and returning kickers is confusing on paper, but Bonde's listed punting numbers (7 punts, 39.7 average) leaving means Braxton Harris still needs a punting answer, while Carter Daughtry and Aidan Bonde's placekicking eligibility give him competition behind Crabb. Long snapper is fully covered with Vince Barefoot, Alexandre Lafontant and Steven Mirabile all back, so the operation around Crabb should be stable even without stats attached to those names.
Sixkiller already threw for 2154 yards and 12 touchdowns as the returning starter, so this offense is built entirely around whether he cuts down the 5 interceptions that came with it. JJ Cowan (544 yards, 8 TD) and Ethan Lawrence (356 yards, 3 TD) give him a run game to lean on, and Trayjen Llanas-Wilcox returns as a proven target, but a two-win season only turns around if Sixkiller's decision-making improves on his own numbers.
Campbell went 2-10 under Braxton Harris but covered conference spreads at a 5-3 clip, a sign the Camels were competitive far more often than the scoreboard shows. The road numbers back that up, 3-3 against the spread with a perfect 2-2 mark as a road underdog, while home covers lagged at 2-4. That gap between actual results and closeness of games suggests 2026 bettors should treat Campbell as live in every conference matchup, especially away from home, rather than trusting the win-loss line.
