MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsCAA · Sean Goldrich · 8-5 last season · No. 30 in our FCS ratings
A No. 30 power rating with just 27% of production coming back is a tension Sean Goldrich cannot coach around, and it makes Brooks Bentley's first live snaps the single biggest swing factor in whether New Hampshire stays a CAA contender or slides back toward the pack.
Can Brooks Bentley run a full slate behind an offense that returns just 16% of its production? With almost the entire skill-position group gone alongside Vezza's numbers, Bentley will be throwing to and handing off to largely unproven faces, and that lack of continuity around him is the bigger threat to New Hampshire's offense than his own inexperience. Expect a rockier first half of the season as those pieces sort themselves out before the offense settles.
The Syracuse trip is a paycheck game New Hampshire is not expected to win, but the season gets defined at home against Harvard, a true coin flip, and against Rhode Island, another game hovering near even odds. Sandwiched around those are plenty of winnable CAA dates, from Stonehill and North Carolina A&T at 80 percent to Elon and Stony Brook in the 60s, that let Sean Goldrich build a record before the margins tighten. A projected 7-5 mark suggests this slate splits close to how the numbers say it should, with Harvard and Rhode Island as the swing games that push New Hampshire either toward or away from a playoff case.

Sean Goldrich's 8-5 mark and 6-2 league record look like a program on the rise, but the underlying number tells a different story: New Hampshire's win rate in conference play ran well ahead of what its yardage margin against those same opponents earned, the mark of a team that got more than it deserved. A modest turnover edge over the year padded that further, and it is exactly the kind of thing that does not repeat. The offense also finished drives efficiently enough that it needed fewer yards than the league average to score, the shakiest part of any formula to sustain, so expect the record to bend back toward the middle of the CAA in 2026.
New Hampshire won 8 games last fall on the strength of a defense that ranked 25th nationally in points allowed and forced enough takeaways to finish plus-5 in turnover margin, while the offense limped along in the 60s and 70s in yards and scoring. That imbalance now shifts to Brooks Bentley, projected to run the show in 2026 with no prior stats on file, inheriting a passing attack that was actually the offense's calling card (60th in passing yards per game) more than a ground game stuck at 79th in rushing. Sean Goldrich's formula stays the same: let the defense, which held opponents to 177 passing yards per game (14th nationally), keep games close while Bentley grows into the job.
Matt Vezza's 2,673 yards and 19 touchdowns walk out the door, and Sean Goldrich hands the offense to a camp battle rather than a proven successor. Brooks Bentley takes the first-team reps as the front-runner, but Matt Festa, Tommy McLeish and Gavin Schwab are all still in the mix, and none of the four carries prior game statistics into the fall. That uncertainty lands on an offense that was already middling last season, 62nd in scoring and 60th in passing yards per game, so whoever wins the job inherits a unit that needs more explosive plays, not just steady ones, to push past 2025's numbers.
Denzell Gibson (340 yards, 2 TD) inherits the lead role after Myles Thomason's 732-yard season walked out the door, and that gap is real given New Hampshire ran for just 135 yards per game a year ago, 79th nationally. Gibson has never carried this kind of load, and behind him Elliot Meine managed only 71 yards on the ground, so Temple transfer Joquez Smith arrives with a real shot to earn early carries rather than sit as insurance. If Gibson can turn last year's complementary production into a featured workload, the ground game stops being the drag on an offense that already ranked a respectable 60th in passing yards per game.
Josh Fillion returns as the top holdover target after just 23 catches for 230 yards, a far cry from what Caleb Burke (764 yards) and Chase Wilson (704 yards, 5 TD) took with them out the door. New Hampshire didn't lean on the pass much anyway, ranking 60th in passing yards per game, so the plan to replace that production centers on Valparaiso transfer Ryan Ricketti, who caught 44 balls for 457 yards and 3 touchdowns last season. Ricketti slots in as the clear No. 1 alongside Fillion, with Ryan Blagg's 2 touchdowns on only 5 catches hinting at a big-play role if Sean Goldrich can get him more volume.
Peyton Strickland's 24 catches for 226 yards and 4 touchdowns were the one proven weapon in a New Hampshire passing game that still finished just 60th nationally, and he comes back as the clear focal point at tight end. Drew Danson and Colby Ramshaw each caught a handful of balls last fall, while Anthony Caruso and Jacob Metivier give Sean Goldrich bodies without any game production to lean on yet. The loss of Denin Limouris barely registers statistically, so this group's ceiling in 2026 rides almost entirely on how much more Strickland can absorb after carrying the position a year ago.
A 135-yard rushing average and a 79th-place national rank there tell the real story of what New Hampshire's front had to fix, and Sean Goldrich now does it without Dylan Maciulewicz and Tolu Olajide up front. The passing game held up well enough, 211 yards through the air ranked 60th, but a 40.5% success rate and 63rd-ranked yards per play show blocks weren't consistently springing the run. Whoever settles in up front in 2026 inherits an offense that moved the ball in chunks (48th in explosiveness) but couldn't sustain drives on the ground, and fixing that gap is what will decide whether this offense takes a real step forward.
New Hampshire's front produced a defense that ranked 14th in passing yards allowed but only 67th against the run and 70th in yards per play, and the group that got there is almost entirely gone. D.J. Johnson, Jordan Mcallister, Zach Garron, Justice Akinmoladun and Tim Bonagura combined for the bulk of last year's line production, including Mcallister's team-relevant sack and the pair of tackles-for-loss each he and Akinmoladun and Bonagura logged, and none of them are back. That leaves the rebuild to whoever the transfer additions are up front, with the run-defense number the clearest thing Sean Goldrich needs fixed before this defense can match its 25th-ranked scoring mark from a season ago.
Trevor Barry's modest 8 tackles and Matthew Sopp's 3 were the top numbers this group produced last fall, a thin statistical footprint for a defense that finished 25th in points allowed per game but just 38th in tackles for loss and 39th in sacks. Isaiah Jones, Seamus McDermott, Max Mendoza and Maddox Moore all return with no prior stat line to point to, so New Hampshire's front seven production in 2026 is largely unproven rather than replaced. The bend-don't-break look Sean Goldrich's defense showed against the pass, 14th nationally in passing yards allowed per game, will only hold up if this linebacker corps starts generating the disruption its 5.83 yards per play allowed and 71st-ranked rate of stopping opponents on schedule badly need.
A secondary that ranked 14th in passing yards allowed per game a year ago loses five contributors in Duncan Moreland, Sean Webb, Zeroun Skinner, Raleigh Collins III and Darren Burton II, part of seven defensive backs gone from that group. Delaware transfer Nyair Domnie arrives at corner to help offset that exodus, though the bigger swing stat is the 67th-ranked rush defense that let opponents stay on schedule too often, a problem an experienced secondary alone will not fix if the front cannot support it. Sean Goldrich still has coverage pieces to plug in Domnie, but the points-allowed number climbs if the back seven cannot make up for what left on the perimeter.
Matt Guidebeck is back to handle the punting after a 36-boot, 41.1-yard season, giving New Hampshire steady field position while the placekicking picture gets sorted out. Nick Reed, who hit 25 of 30 field goals for 105 points last year, is gone, and none of the three returning kickers on the roster, Greg Motorny, Noah Ritko or Dillon Schlopy, have any game statistics on file, so Sean Goldrich is working from a blank slate on points off the tee. That uncertainty at kicker is the swing factor for a team that went 8-5 and 6-2 in conference, since close CAA games often come down to whoever wins that job.
Matt Vezza's 2673 yards and 19 touchdowns walk out the door, and New Hampshire hands the offense to Brooks Bentley, who has thrown zero passes on record. Peyton Strickland's 24 catches and 4 scores give him a reliable outlet, and Valparaiso transfer Ryan Ricketti arrives off a 44-catch, 457-yard season to hand Bentley a ready-made target, but this offense rises or falls on how fast the new quarterback plays with what he already has around him.
Sean Goldrich's crew is a different animal laying points at home, covering three of four chances as a home favorite, and the 4-1 straight-up mark there backs up the number. That reliability evaporates against ranked competition, where New Hampshire has covered just once in four tries and gone 1-3 outright, exposing the ceiling against the CAA's top-shelf opposition. Bet the Wildcats when they are favored under the lights in Durham, fade them the moment a ranked opponent shows up on the schedule.
