Hayden Johnson returns to run an offense that finished 25th in scoring while a defense that allowed just 13.9 points per game anchors the case for a repeat, and the gap between finishing 9th in the final poll and landing 11th entering 2026 says the league expects Lehigh to be chased, not chasing.
Can Hayden Johnson turn a run-heavy complement into the offense's actual air attack now that its top target is gone? Johnson returns with 66.7% of the offensive production around him intact, and that continuity in protection and scheme matters more than any single receiver replacement, since Lehigh went 12-1 last season without needing him to be a gunslinger. The likely outcome is Johnson leans on that returning cast and game-manages a defense-first team back to the top of the Patriot League rather than chasing box score numbers Jamiel used to produce.
A 12-1 team with a middling schedule rank of 84 doesn't get truly tested until it travels to Villanova, a coin-flip game that will say more about Lehigh's 2026 than anything on the rest of the slate. The trip to Lafayette and the road date at Pennsylvania round out the stretch that separates another Patriot League run from a season that just looks good on paper. Everything else, including home dates with Fordham and Bucknell, sets up as the kind of week Richard Nagy's group should simply take care of on the way to the games that matter.

Richard Nagy just ran the table in league play at 6-0 and finished 12-1, the kind of season that puts Lehigh at No. 11 nationally in power rating. That combination of an unbeaten conference slate and a near-perfect overall mark is not a fluke to be managed, it is a program operating at its ceiling heading into 2026. The bar Nagy set with this group is now the standard the roster turnover has to hold.
Lehigh's identity is a punishing rushing attack that ranked 3rd nationally at 230 yards a game and a defense that allowed just 13.9 points per game, and that formula doesn't need reinvention with Hayden Johnson back under center. Johnson threw for 2,511 yards with 18 touchdowns against just 6 interceptions last season, and with him settled at quarterback, Richard Nagy can keep leaning on the run-first approach that produced a 6.88 yards-per-play average, 4th nationally. The bigger question is chasing explosiveness, since an offense this efficient on early downs still ranked only 52nd in explosive-play value, and finding more chunk plays would turn a very good offense into a dangerous one.
Hayden Johnson threw for 2,511 yards and 18 touchdowns behind an offense that ran for 230 yards a game, third-best nationally, and averaged 6.88 yards per play. That ground-first identity is exactly why Johnson's job is not up for debate: he protected the ball well enough (six picks) to let Lehigh's rushing attack dictate games, and the passing game's modest 194 yards a game and 78th-ranked output reflect a system built to support him rather than lean on him. Matt Machalik and Holden Nagin sit behind him as depth pieces, but this room runs through Johnson, and a full-strength encore from him keeps Lehigh's third-down (44.9%) and success-rate numbers (46.9%) trending the same direction that produced a 12-1 season.
Luke Yoder is the story here, full stop. His 1409 yards and 15 touchdowns anchored a rushing attack that finished 3rd nationally in rushing yards per game, and he returns as the workhorse behind a Lehigh offense that ranked 4th in yards per play. Jaden Green's 854 yards and 8 scores are gone, but Aaron Crossley (129 yards, 3 TD) and Connor Hilling (19 yards) give Richard Nagy proven complementary pieces, while Nolan Larkin and Sam Spector add depth without a track record yet. With Yoder churning behind that ground game, this backfield should keep Lehigh's run-heavy identity intact even as the passing game lags at 78th nationally.
Geoffrey Jamiel's 73 catches and Mason Humphrey's 651 yards leave a real hole in a passing game that already ranked just 78th nationally in yards per game, even as the ground attack (3rd in rushing yards per game) carried the offense. Matt D'Avino (18 catches, 257 yards) and Anthony Feaster (11 for 180) are the proven hands left, but neither has shown the big-play juice Jamiel provided, and Jake Pukszyn arrives from Liberty as an unknown quantity rather than a ready-made fix. Expect Richard Nagy to keep leaning on the run while D'Avino and Feaster try to grow into a bigger target share.
Joseph Marranca's 11 catches for 91 yards was the closest thing to a featured role this group had in an offense that leaned on 230 rushing yards per game (3rd nationally) rather than the pass, where Lehigh ranked just 78th. Garrett Guess turned three catches into a touchdown, and with Ryan Moses, Aiden Schomp and Jake Stalsitz all back without a target to their name yet, this is Marranca's group to define as a blocking-first complement to that ground attack. Given the run-heavy identity that produced a 6.88 yards-per-play mark (4th nationally), expect the tight ends to keep clearing lanes more than stacking receiving stats in 2026.
A line that helped push 230 rushing yards per game (3rd nationally) and 6.88 yards per play (4th) loses four names up front in CJ Abell, Christian Curatolo, Langston Jones and Aidan Palmer, so the production that made Lehigh's ground game so explosive walks out the door with them. TJ Akinyelu, Jacob Albaugh, Sammy Ayache, Spencer Dow, Austin Huff and Giacomo Macce all return to the room, and it will fall on that group to rebuild the interior push that carried Richard Nagy's offense. Sebastian Cugini, a three-star tackle signee out of Juanita, joins as a high school addition rather than a fix-now transfer, which means whatever answer Lehigh finds for 2026 has to come largely from the returners already on campus.
Lehigh's front stuffed the run at a rate few teams in the country could touch, holding opponents to 71 yards a game on the ground, best in the nation, and now the group tasked with repeating that is almost entirely different names. Kingsley Acho, Broc Bender, Preston Davis, Daniel Gredell, Bryce Izundu and Lucas Manderbach all return with no track record of production to lean on, an unusual spot for a line coming off a 1st-ranked scoring defense. Richard Nagy brought in Dominic Volomino from Thomas Jefferson and Silas Day from Palisades to add juice off the edge, and how quickly that pair translates matters more here than the raw number of losses up front, since the run defense identity this program built is the one thing 2026 cannot afford to lose.
Lehigh's front seven allowed just 71 rushing yards a game and 13.9 points overall, and the linebacker corps built that wall largely intact for 2026. Devin Andrews, Talan Dudley, Cole Hughes, Benjamin Manley, William Parton and Cole Turner all return to a group that finished 1st nationally in rush defense and 5th in yards per play allowed, even after Jackson Dowd, Brycen Edwards, Tyler Ochojski and Julian Wilson are gone. With that much of the tackling core back, Richard Nagy's defense should still be built to smother the run first and dare teams to win through the air, where the pass defense ranked a more modest 47th.
Lehigh's secondary anchored the nation's stingiest scoring defense a year ago, allowing just 13.9 points per game, and the group that did it is largely intact. Walker Blair, DJ Brown, Nolan Coen, Luke Denny, Joshua Jones and Tre Meadows all return to a back end that shut down the run (71 yards allowed per game, tops nationally) while ranking a more modest 47th against the pass, the clear area to sharpen. Andy Tatsch joins as an incoming safety, but the story here is continuity, not reconstruction, even with CJ Wood, Mekhai Smith, Aidan Singleton, Nick Peltekian and Mason Moore gone.
Nick Garrido's 9-of-10 clip and 62 points walk out the door with him, leaving Connor Poole as the incumbent placekicker after going 3 of 4 with a 32-yard long in a limited 2025 sample. John Zipf returns as well, though he hasn't attempted a field goal yet, so Poole is the one with the track record to build on for a Lehigh team that just went 12-1 and swept its conference slate. Long snappers Connor Ludwig and Ridgely Ritter are both back, giving Richard Nagy continuity at that spot even as the kicking job now runs through Poole by default.
Geoffrey Jamiel took 73 catches, 1067 yards and 8 touchdowns out the door, and with zero portal additions and a 183-ranked class behind him, Lehigh has no external fix for that hole. That puts the season on Luke Yoder, who ran for 1409 yards and 15 touchdowns a year ago, to shoulder even more of the offense while Hayden Johnson finds new targets among Matt D'Avino and Anthony Feaster's much smaller sample sizes. If Yoder's workload holds up against a schedule that now knows he is the plan, Lehigh's offense survives Jamiel's exit.
Lehigh did not just win 12 games under Richard Nagy, it demolished spreads doing it, covering 8-2-1 overall and never dropping below an 80 percent cover rate whether at home, on the road, or in Patriot League play. A perfect 6-0 straight up in conference with a matching 4-1-1 cover mark means bettors caught on to what Lehigh was doing and still could not find the number that stopped it. The 2-0 straight up mark against ranked teams shows this was not garbage-time padding, and until sportsbooks price in that level of dominance, backing Lehigh again is the sharpest carryover angle into 2026.
