Dom Nankil returns to run an offense that finished 40th in scoring but has to do it with only 44% of its production back, which makes a power rating of 53 look more like a floor than a launching pad for San Diego in 2026.
Can Dom Nankil produce points with barely 43.5% of the offense back around him? Adam Criter's 927 yards and 12 touchdowns walk out the door, and no other proven weapon is listed to pick up that slack. Nankil's experience keeps San Diego functional, but the scoring dips until someone besides him proves he can carry the ball consistently.
San Diego's floor is set at Idaho State, a 23% shot that stands as the roughest test on the slate, sandwiched around trips to Cal Poly (33%) and a home date with UC Davis (32%) that will do more to define Brandon Moore's season than anything against Davidson, Valparaiso or Stetson, all sitting at 87% or better. The rest of the Pioneer Football League slate is soft by comparison, road trips to Dayton (51%) and Drake (41%) and Butler (59%) that are winnable but not gimmes. Get through that three-game stretch against Idaho State, Cal Poly and UC Davis anywhere close to even, and the projected 6-5 mark undersells what this roster can do.

Brandon Moore closed 2025 at 8-4 and 6-2 in Pioneer play, the kind of season that buys a staff room to keep building rather than answer questions. San Diego's power rating sits at a middling No. 53, a number that undersells a program that won two-thirds of its games and finished near the top of its own league. The 2026 storyline is not about pressure, it is about whether Moore's group can turn a solid conference record into the kind of jump that outruns that neutral national number.
San Diego's real edge in 2026 is not the arm, it's the ball security: a plus-12 turnover margin last fall gave Dom Nankil's offense a cushion its middling 39.0% success rate couldn't earn on its own. Nankil returns after throwing for 1,941 yards with 13 touchdowns against just 3 interceptions, and that ratio is the reason Brandon Moore's attack can survive being 75th nationally in success rate. If the run game stays efficient enough to set up explosive shots (38th in explosiveness), Nankil's turnover-averse style keeps San Diego winning close games rather than needing to outscore anyone.
Dom Nankil threw for 1,941 yards with 13 touchdowns against just 3 interceptions last season, and that efficiency is exactly why San Diego hands him the job again rather than churn the room. The passing attack still ranked only 67th nationally, so the ceiling for 2026 is less about who starts and more about whether Nankil can push explosive numbers up from that middling output. Behind him, Tyler Voss has real game tape from his 442-yard, 3-touchdown work, and Trabuco Hills product Tristan Zale joins as a high school signee, giving Brandon Moore actual competition for reps even with Nankil firmly entrenched atop the depth chart.
Matt Colombo's 704 yards and 10 touchdowns walk out the door, and nothing on the returning depth chart hints at a replacement in kind. Omar Mbakwe managed just 78 yards a year ago, John Lim and Eric Mulkey were non-factors, and Zach Thompson has no statistical track record to lean on. San Diego averaged 157 rushing yards per game (54th) behind that departed production, so Brandon Moore's offense will need Mbakwe or Thompson to emerge as a real ball-carrier or the 28.4 points per game that fueled last year's 8-4 run gets a lot harder to replicate.
Cole Monach (54 catches, 822 yards, 6 TD) and Josh Heverly (47 catches, 614 yards, 6 TD) accounted for the bulk of the passing production, and both are gone, leaving Christopher Hall (19 catches, 229 yards) as the most proven option in the room. Dylan Tapley managed just 7 catches but turned them into 121 yards, a big-play thread Brandon Moore needs more of after San Diego ranked 67th in passing yards per game and 75th in offensive success rate. Sebastian Moreno, a three-star signee out of Peoria Centennial, joins incoming Luke Morgan and Ezra Maul as unproven pieces who will need time behind Hall and Tapley.
Peyton Smith's 20 catches were modest production, but it was the only real receiving thread at tight end and it's gone, along with Dylan Lawson and three others who logged no statistical footprint. Gianno Kassab, Nolan Keeping and Reid Nicholson return with no catches between them, meaning San Diego's passing attack, already just 67th nationally at 205 yards per game, has to manufacture a target at the position from scratch rather than reload one. Brandon Moore's offense can still lean on its 157 rushing yards per game while that trio tries to turn blocking reps into a real receiving role.
Brandon Moore watched his line push 5.52 yards per play and a middling 39.0% success rate a year ago, and now four of those bodies, Evans Bowling, Jack D'Ambra, Nick Struempf and Oscar Weigel, are out the door. Taki Dadiotis, Avijit Dhindsa, Zane Feltz, Evan Gaea and Falesalafai Gatoloai return as the names on the depth chart, but without knowing who actually started, this group reads as a rebuild rather than a settled front five. The 157 rushing yards per game and 205 passing yards per game San Diego produced in 2025 will only hold up if enough of that returning group actually locks down jobs up front.
San Diego's front stuffed the run to the tune of 107 yards allowed per game, 7th nationally, even as the pass defense bled 242 yards a game and ranked 93rd, a split that points squarely at the line's ability to control gaps but not generate enough pressure to bail out the secondary. Brian Coburn, Malachi Cooper, Jack Hemmert and Evan Niemi are all gone from that group, so River Abenroth, Shaun Aletor, Mason Charles, Diezel Hernandez, Connor Johnston and Eduardo Pescatore inherit a run defense with a real identity to protect. If that six-man returning core can find any added pass rush, the yards-per-play number (5.43, 38th) has room to climb.
San Diego's front seven held up against the run last season, ranking 7th in rushing yards allowed at 107 per game, but the pass defense sagged to 93rd nationally in yards allowed through the air. That gap matters now with Rashid Gbaja-Biamila, Jerry Rangel, Mo Vanderweil and Tre Moore all gone from the linebacker room. Hudson Emeterio, Nick Felago, Nate Fischer, Cayden Gibson, Angel Gonzalez and Sadiq Henry all return to carry the group forward, and Los Gatos high school product Austin Krug joins as an incoming signee for Brandon Moore to develop behind them.
San Diego's secondary carried a defense that ran hot against the pass in 2025, giving up 242 yards per game through the air (93rd) even as the run defense held firm at 107 yards allowed (7th). Five contributors from that group are gone in Jake Higgins, Ruben Lopez, Ryan Meloche, Trey Sena-Ortega and Ezekiel Swayne, but CJ Castille, Josiah Estes, Caden Gingg, Max Gonzales, Jonathan Guerrero and Ian Harrison all return to rebuild the back end. Brandon Moore's group finished 38th in yards per play allowed, so the path to a better 2026 defense runs through those six tightening up coverage rather than any personnel search.
Emiliano Salazar hit 15 of 17 field goals with an 85-point season and a long of 47, and San Diego's kicking game is set even before Caden Abeleda-Leonard factors into the picture. Aydan Corrales returns after a 39.8-yard average on 30 punts, giving Brandon Moore a specialist trio that needs no on-the-job learning at kicker or punter. The only new piece is Jakob Herbst at long snapper, joining incumbent Carter Shupper, but with Salazar and Corrales both back, San Diego's special teams are a strength heading into 2026 rather than a question mark.
Adam Criter's 927 yards and 12 touchdowns walk out the door, and San Diego has no transfer addition to soften that blow, so Dom Nankil's 2026 season rests on Christopher Hall and Dylan Tapley taking on bigger roles than 19 catches and 7 catches, respectively. Nankil threw for 1,941 yards and 13 touchdowns against just 3 interceptions last year, but that efficiency only holds up if Hall and Tapley turn into every-down targets rather than complementary pieces.
San Diego went 8-4 straight up but split evenly against the number at 6-6, and the split is entirely about geography. At home, Brandon Moore's team covered 67% of the time and went 4-2 both straight up and against the spread, including a 60% cover rate as a favorite. On the road that flips hard, just 2-4 against the spread and 33% covering, so backing the Toreros at home while fading them away from Torero Stadium is the play into 2026.
