A defense that gave up 43.6 points a game last fall, good for 124th nationally in scoring defense, will bury whatever Kevin White produces behind center before the Aggies ever sniff a winning record in 2026.
Can North Carolina A&T's defense hold up enough for Kevin White to carry an offense that returns 81.5% of its production? With only 48% of defensive production back, the answer leans toward no, since White and a nearly intact offensive corps will have to outscore a unit that is starting over against CAA opponents. Wesley Graves and his 569 rushing yards are gone, but the bigger gap sits on defense, and that side determines whether 2026 looks better than 2-10.
Shawn Gibbs draws a slate that punishes his roster most away from Greensboro, with the trip to Georgia State a near-lock loss at just 4% and road tests at Monmouth (12%) and home against Rhode Island (17%) offering little more hope. The closest thing to a coin-flip week comes at Hampton (49%) and at home against Morgan State (45%), which is where any bounce-back from 2-10 has to start. Ranked 95th in difficulty, this is a schedule that gives the Aggies more shots at .500 than at anything resembling a signature win.

A 2-10 finish with a 2-6 mark in league play left North Carolina A&T sitting at #113 in the power ratings, and that combination of results defines where Shawn Gibbs starts from in 2026. There is no hidden overachievement to point to here and no talent gap masking a better on-field product, just a program that lost far more than it won across the board last fall. The rebuild for Gibbs in 2026 has to start with simply making conference games competitive again, since a 2-6 league mark is the number that most directly shapes how this season gets judged.
A minus-15 turnover margin and a 2-4 mark in one-score games buried North Carolina A&T's record last fall, but neither figure is likely to repeat, and a defense that let opponents score every 10.8 yards, cheap points by any measure, was the actual problem. That defense, 124th in points allowed, has to find stops before the turnover luck evens out. Kevin White returns at quarterback after throwing for 1,516 yards, and an offense that ranked 3rd nationally in explosiveness on its successful plays needs him to generate more of them, since a 31.2% success rate left far too many drives dead before they got there.
Kevin White threw for 1,516 yards last season but tossed six interceptions against just seven touchdowns, and that ratio is the whole story of an offense that ranked 122nd nationally in success rate despite oddly explosive plays when they connected. White comes back as the settled starter, with Nelson Layne and Braxton Thomas the experienced arms behind him if his turnovers pile up again. The 2025 unit averaged just 4.47 yards per play and 280 total yards per game, so a jump for A&T hinges less on finding a quarterback than on White tightening up decisions he already has the arm to make.
Wesley Graves is gone after producing 569 yards and 5 touchdowns, the single biggest hole in a ground game that managed only 104 rushing yards per game, 114th nationally. That backfield production has to come from somewhere new, since the pre-2026 numbers show nobody left to replace it by name. The strange twist is that this offense already ranked 3rd nationally in explosiveness on successful plays, so the pieces to hit chunk runs exist, they just need a back who can find the hole against a unit that finished 122nd in success rate overall.
Jayvonne Dillard's 43 catches for 539 yards were the engine of an Aggie passing game that still finished 96th in yards per game, and his return alongside Amonte Jones (28-408-1) and Elijah Kennedy (25-305) gives Shawn Gibbs his top three targets back intact. The bigger swing factor is efficiency, not volume: this offense ranked 122nd in success rate but 3rd nationally in explosiveness, meaning Dillard and company hit chunk plays but couldn't sustain drives, and losing Jamison Warren's 23 catches only raises the burden on Michael Carlock-Williams, who turned 9 grabs into 3 touchdowns, to become a real red-zone answer. If that trio can turn more of those explosive shots into a higher snap-to-snap success rate, the passing game stops being a boom-or-bust unit and starts fixing the 280 yards per game that sank 2025.
Antoine Bell caught just three balls but turned two into touchdowns, a red-zone weapon buried inside an offense that ranked 122nd in success rate. Anthony Rucker was the volume man among the tight ends, 10 catches for 129 yards, and both return alongside Jaylen Baker and Tony Sanchez, neither of whom has a stat line yet. The bigger issue for 2026 is not the tight end room, it is the offense around it, a unit that averaged just 4.47 yards per play but somehow ranked 3rd nationally in explosiveness, meaning when Bell or Rucker got the ball loose, something good actually happened.
A line that produced 4.47 yards per play (117th nationally) and just 104 rushing yards per game (114th) is the root of an offense that scored only 20.5 points per game a year ago, even with an explosive-play rate that ranked 3rd in the country when the Aggies actually broke through. The departures of Jonathan Cannon Jr., Korion Sharpe and Sterling Wiggins strip out experience up front, and Shawn Gibbs turns to Florida Atlantic transfer Qae'Shon Sapp to plug the interior. Sapp arrives with no track record to lean on, so the bet is that better movement inside turns those occasional explosive gains into a sustainable run game rather than the boom-or-bust attack North Carolina A&T ran in 2025.
Yards per play allowed of 7.28, good for 124th nationally, tells the real story up front: this line could not slow anyone down, and the production that did exist is now gone, with Marquis Hood's lone sack and Tim Alderman off the roster. Shawn Gibbs brings in Ben Boulware from Oak Grove to add a body up front, but he arrives with no prior college statistics, so the improvement has to come from scheme and the reps behind him rather than a proven difference-maker. Given a run defense already surrendering 202 yards a game, expecting a jump from 113th in that category in year one of this retooled front is asking a lot.
The tackle sheet from 2025 tells the story here: 43.6 points and 202 rushing yards a game surrendered, with the front seven getting gashed to the tune of 7.28 yards per snap, 124th nationally. Joshua Iseah, Jelani King-Leverett and MarQuis Roberts are all gone from that group, none of them lit up the box score, which means the answers Shawn Gibbs needs at linebacker are not replacing production so much as finally creating some. Until this defense stops opponents from staying on schedule at a rate better than 92nd nationally, the same explosive-play problem that sank 2025 follows it into CAA play.
Cameren Dalrymple's 5 tackles topped a secondary that gave up 270 passing yards a game, 120th nationally, so the modest returning production line is not the encouraging sign it looks like on paper. PeeWee Jones and Nick Caldwell are the corners left standing after Ty Williams Jr. and Aaron Harris departed, while Kamari Blankumsee, Jonathan Kimbrough-Campbell and Dom Atkinson-Bell make up a safety group that has to tackle far better than the 7.28 yards per play allowed (124th) suggests it did in 2025. With almost no proven takeaway or run-support numbers among the returners, this group's floor is whatever Blankumsee and Dalrymple can build on individually, not a unit that's shown it can hold up as a whole.
DJ Page is the one certainty in this kicking operation, back after 73 punts at a 40.5-yard clip. What Shawn Gibbs cannot replace with a returner is Andrew Brown, who made 15 of 17 field goals and 70 points last season, and with Jay Haggins also gone, North Carolina A&T heads into 2026 without any placekicking production on the roster. Both long snappers, Damien Jackson Jr. and Bryson Ruddy, are also out the door, leaving the entire kick operation behind Page to be built from scratch.
Kevin White threw for 1,516 yards but tossed 6 interceptions against 7 touchdowns last fall, and with Wesley Graves' 569 rushing yards gone from the backfield, North Carolina A&T's offense tilts even more onto his arm in 2026. Jayvonne Dillard and Amonte Jones give White proven targets on the outside, so the swing is simple: if White tightens up the turnovers from a season ago, the passing game has enough returning production to carry an offense that no longer has its lead runner.
North Carolina A&T went 2-10, but bettors who ignored the record and just played the number came out flat at 6-6 against the spread, with the same 50 percent cover rate at home and on the road. The Aggies never covered as a favorite because they never were one, and as road underdogs they split 3-3, a fair reflection of a team that lost every true road game outright but rarely got buried on the number. Shawn Gibbs's group even bounced back against the line after a loss, covering 5-4 in those spots, proof this was a bad team that still knew how to keep a game inside the number.
