MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsCAA · Tony Trisciani · 6-6 last season · No. 46 in our FCS ratings
Tony Trisciani is betting that a top-46 power rating can survive one of the league's thinnest returning cores, and the margin for error on both sides of the ball, a 37th-ranked scoring offense and a defense giving up 24.8 a game, is thinner still.
Can Elon put enough around Marco Lainez to make his first year as a starter survivable? With just 23.9% of offensive production back, the pieces that would ease a first-time starter's transition are largely gone, and the defense returning only 40.9% of its own snaps offers no cushion if the offense stalls out early. Expect a rough, uneven start while Trisciani's staff rebuilds the supporting cast around Lainez on the fly.
Elon's schedule sits at 98th in difficulty, but the season turns on three road trips: a trip to Stanford that projects as an outright mismatch at just 5%, plus toss-up tests at Rhode Island (33%) and New Hampshire (38%). Those three games, not the home slate against Hampton or Campbell, will decide whether Tony Trisciani's team pushes past last year's 6-6 mark. A 7-5 projection assumes Elon banks its home favorites, but Rhode Island and New Hampshire are the swing games that separate a step forward from another split conference record.

Elon split its conference slate at 4-4 and finished 6-6 overall, an ordinary line that undersells how the Phoenix actually play. Tony Trisciani's group grades out as one of the stronger CAA rosters nationally, No. 46 overall, a level well above what the .500 record suggests. That gap between the talent on the field and the results on the scoreboard is the real story heading into 2026, and it points to a team that should be pushing for more than another split conference season.
Elon's offense was a strange split last year, explosive on the plays that hit (18th nationally in explosiveness) but stuck on the ground otherwise, converting third downs at just a 36.8% clip. That gap defines the projection into 2026 with Marco Lainez expected to take over at quarterback off a thin 113-yard sample, a low-volume arrival tasked with sustaining drives rather than just hitting the occasional home run. The defense gives him room to grow into it, holding rushers to 118 yards a game (13th) even while the pass defense lagged at 105th, so Elon's floor is a run-heavy, ball-control identity that leans on the front seven while Lainez finds his footing.
Marco Lainez takes the first-team reps into camp as the front-runner, though his 113 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions from last season hardly lock up the job against Elijah Guttman and TJ Crews IV. Whoever wins the reps inherits an offense that ran the ball well (168 yards per game, 39th nationally) and hit explosive plays at an 18th-ranked clip, but stalled through the air at 203 yards per game (69th) and moved the chains on just 36.8% of third downs (77th). With Landen Clark's lone punt the only other quarterback departure on record, this is a real camp battle around Lainez rather than a wide-open scramble, and the passing game's efficiency depends on him closing it out.
Dan Frederick is the lead back by default, but his 244 yards on the ground last season barely register next to the 673 and 384 yards that Jimmyll Williams and TJ Thomas Jr. took with them out the door. That leaves Elon replacing 9 of last year's rushing touchdowns behind Frederick with Marcus McFarlane, who managed just 37 yards, and unproven names in Dino McRae and Josiah Robinson. A ground game that ranked 39th nationally in rushing yards per game now leans on unproven volume, which is a real step down for an offense that scored at a 37th-ranked clip.
Isaiah Fuhrmann's 907 yards and 9 touchdowns walk out the door, but Landyn Backey's 26 catches for 457 yards and 4 scores make him the clear top target in an offense that already ranked 18th nationally in explosiveness on successful plays. Zimere Winston (309 yards, 3 TD) and Kenaz McMillian (22 catches, no touchdowns) give Elon a functional second and third option, though neither has shown Fuhrmann's finishing ability in the end zone. The bigger question is volume, since this passing game ranked just 69th in yards per game and 77th on third downs, and replacing Fuhrmann's production likely means Backey has to become a true focal point rather than one piece of a committee.
Dylan Magazu's 11 catches for 168 yards and 2 touchdowns were modest, but they were the most productive tight end line on this roster, and he heads back into 2026 as the clear focal point at the position. Brendan Hester, Jack O'Connell and Max Troiano all return without a catch on record, so the group's ceiling this fall rests on whether any of them can complement Magazu as a receiving threat. The bigger swing factor is scheme fit, an offense that ranked 18th nationally in explosiveness but just 69th in success rate needs the tight ends to produce chunk plays, not just move the chains.
Elon's offense hit its explosive plays a year ago, ranking 18th nationally in explosiveness and running for 168 yards a game, but that came behind a line that now loses three starters in Luke Duska, Brayden Walker and Ahmarion McLeod. The bigger issue was closing out downs, a unit that finished 77th in third down rate and 69th in success rate despite the big-play production, and none of that gets fixed without answers up front. Tony Trisciani needs the front five to convert the explosiveness into more sustained drives, not just chunk gains, for the ground game to hold its 39th-ranked national standing in 2026.
Elon's front held up against the run last season, holding opponents to 118 yards on the ground, but the pass rush production walked out the door with Parris Lowery, Kahmari Brown, Jake Louro, Jared Kirksey and Marcus Mauney all gone from a line that combined for only a handful of tackles and a single sack apiece anyway. That thin sack total lines up with a defense that let opponents complete too much through the air, ranking 105th in passing yards allowed per game, and Tony Trisciani needs answers there more than at the point of attack. The run-stopping foundation this line built is worth protecting in 2026, but whoever fills these snaps has to generate more pressure than the group that just left.
Elon's run defense was the calling card in 2025, ranking 13th nationally in rushing yards allowed per game, but the linebacker corps that helped build that number loses Asher Cunningham, Carter Wyatt and Jayson Singer. None piled up huge tackle totals individually, which makes the group's collective feel for gap discipline harder to simply replace on paper. The bigger concern for Tony Trisciani is a pass defense that ranked just 105th in yards allowed per game, and that number will not improve unless whoever fills these linebacker spots can hold up in coverage as well as they stuffed the run.
Elon's pass defense was the soft spot in an otherwise solid unit, ranking 105th in passing yards allowed per game even as the run defense checked in 13th nationally. None of the returning secondary pieces carry real tackle numbers, Eric Jones' 3 tackles and Senquavious Alsobrooks' 2 lead a group short on production, so Wisconsin transfer Remington Moss arrives with a real chance to start at safety immediately. With Ishmel Atkins and Brycen Scott gone, the back end's identity in 2026 hinges less on continuity than on whether Moss and Jevean Brown can turn a run-stuffing defense into one that can also cover.
Luke Barnes gives Elon a real weapon, having hit 15 of 18 field goals with a long of 50 and 85 points last season, so the kicking game is settled and productive. The bigger swing is at punter, where Carter Stimson steps in for Jeff Yurk, who averaged 48.3 yards on 52 punts, a number Stimson has no track record replacing yet. Trey Hoffman returns at long snapper, at least keeping the operation around Barnes intact even as the punting unit starts over.
Elon's season swings on Marco Lainez, who threw for just 113 yards a season ago and now steps in as the projected starter with 14 players gone through the portal. He has help, with Landyn Backey (26 catches, 457 yards, 4 TD) and Zimere Winston (17 catches, 309 yards, 3 TD) both back outside, but Lainez turning that thin resume into a real passing game determines whether Elon's offense functions at all in 2026.
Elon covered every time it was a home favorite last year, going 3-0 against the spread in those spots, and the broader 60% home cover rate backs up that reputation under Tony Trisciani. The number that should worry backers is the 0-2 mark against ranked teams, a total no-show against the league's best. Conference games were a coin flip against the number at 3-4, so the bet here is Elon covers comfortably as a host but stays a fade whenever CAA's top tier shows up on the schedule.
