Charleston Southern's defense held up its end at 33rd in scoring, but Gabe Giardina is betting an offense that managed just 16.6 points a game can find enough juice behind Jared Echols to stop wasting that effort.
Can Jared Echols carry an offense that returns just 28.2% of its production after Zolten Osborne's 2,229 yards and 12 touchdowns walk out the door? The defense keeps 64.5% of its snaps back, which buys Echols time to grow into the job, but with almost every skill piece around him unproven, Charleston Southern's ceiling in 2026 rides entirely on how fast he plays like a starter and not a first-timer.
The 2026 slate front-loads Charleston Southern's toughest ask, a trip to Clemson that offers zero realistic path to a win, sandwiched near a road date at Georgia Southern where the Buccaneers are projected a long shot. Squeeze past a coin-flip trip to The Citadel and a road test at Lindenwood, and the softer back half against Gardner-Webb, South Carolina State and UT Martin is where the 5-7 projection either holds or gets salvaged. Gabe Giardina's group has no margin against the two toughest non-FBS road games, so how it survives Georgia Southern and Lindenwood, not the Clemson score, decides whether this team finishes above or below last year's mark.

Gabe Giardina's 2025 finished at 5-7, a step below break-even despite a 4-4 mark in Big South-OVC play that shows the roster was competitive week to week within the league. The gap between an even conference ledger and a losing overall record is the story here, non-conference results dragged the season down more than league play did. A power ranking of 72nd nationally lines up with a program treading water rather than clearly trending, so 2026 is about turning those close conference games into overall wins.
Charleston Southern's offense ranked 6th nationally in explosiveness last season but still finished 112th in points per game, a split that points to a unit that hits chunk plays and then stalls, evidenced by a 111th-ranked third down rate and 114th-ranked success rate. The bigger flag is that the record flatters this group: a 5-3 mark in one-score games and a conference yardage margin that beat what the numbers say it should have both point toward regression under Gabe Giardina in 2026. The one real bounce-back case is need-more-yards inefficiency on offense (18.9 yards per point against a 13.9 league median), which has room to tighten even as the overall picture points down, not up.
Zolten Osborne's 2,229 yards and 12 touchdowns walk out the door, leaving Jared Echols as the front-runner to take over after throwing for just 24 yards last season. The camp battle is not settled, with Caden Clay and Braxton Scott both in the mix, but Echols is penciled in with the first-team reps. Whoever wins the job inherits an offense that ranked 114th in success rate and 111th on third down, though the explosiveness number, 6th nationally on successful plays, hints at a big-play burst if the new quarterback can just keep drives alive.
Hakeem Watters takes over as the clear lead back after piling up 450 yards and 3 touchdowns behind Ke'Marion Baldwin last season, and replacing Baldwin's 778 yards and 6 scores now falls mostly on him. Isaiah Gordon and Brandon Musch return as complementary options after modest showings, while Charleston Southern's ground game ranked 102nd in rushing yards per game and 114th in offensive success rate, numbers Watters alone cannot flip. The one bright spot is that when this offense did hit, it hit big, ranking 6th nationally in explosiveness, so the backfield's job in 2026 is less about volume and more about making Watters' touches count.
Mekhi Campfield's 31 catches for 394 yards return as the clear top target, but Charleston Southern's passing game loses Rashawn Cunningham's 628 yards and 7 touchdowns along with Jamil Bishop's 324 yards, gutting the big-play production behind an offense that ranked 114th in success rate a year ago. Quay Kindell scored twice on just 13 grabs and offers a chance to grow into a second option, while Laden Beckwith and Kevin Boone bring only a handful of catches between them. Charleston Southern's 1.44 explosiveness mark ranked 6th nationally in 2025, so the passing attack still hit chunk plays when it connected; Campfield and Kindell now have to prove that explosiveness travels without Cunningham's touchdown production attached to it.
Nebanye Moore's 24 catches and 248 yards were the only tight end production of note on a Charleston Southern offense that ranked 114th in success rate and 111th on third downs, so his return matters more than the modest numbers suggest. Hunter Green caught just one pass but is back too, and Adam Bass, Andrew Dunn, Hasan Lee Jr. and Hudson Morton all return without a statistical track record, meaning Gabe Giardina's staff will lean on Moore to anchor a passing game that actually moved the ball efficiently (5.43 yards per play, 76th in passing yards per game) once it found a rhythm. With Landon Sauers and Kaden Strickland gone, Moore's ability to become a bigger part of that intermediate passing attack, rather than just its most experienced name, will decide whether this group upgrades a third-down offense that stalled out too often in 2025.
Charleston Southern's line gave up an offense that stalled at a 35.0% success rate and 31.6% on third downs, numbers that explain why 16.6 points per game ranked 112th nationally despite flashes of big-play juice on the ground and through the air. Gabe Giardina now has to piece together a front with five departed starters in Loushon Campos, Ronnie Hayes II, Ethan Hunt, Colin Sorensen and Andrew Threatt all gone, wiping out the group that struggled to sustain drives even when the skill talent produced explosive plays. Whoever fills those five spots inherits an offense that already had the pieces to hit chunk yardage, the line just has to keep it upright long enough to use them.
Charleston Southern's front let opponents stay on schedule at a 44.7% clip, a number that explains why the line finished 53rd in yards per play allowed even as the overall defense held up respectably at 33rd in points allowed. That modest per-play pressure now has to survive without David Portu, whose 9 tackles and lone sack were the most productive individual numbers this group produced last fall, plus the departures of Josias Addison and Travis Rice. Gabe Giardina's staff is left leaning on an experienced front to hold the rushing defense near its 164-yard mark while it finds new juice off the edge.
Charleston Southern's defense held up respectably in 2025, ranking 33rd nationally in points allowed at 24.0 per game, but that number now runs through a linebacker corps stripped of its top production. Nick Bartalo and Tylan Hollis each logged 11 tackles a year ago, with Justin Waters chipping in 8 tackles and a tackle for loss, and all three are gone. The bigger concern is what was already shaky underneath those numbers, a defense that let 44.7% of opponent plays stay on schedule, 95th nationally, and Gabe Giardina now has to find answers there without the linebackers who anchored last year's snaps.
The secondary held up better than the surrounding numbers suggest, holding foes to 24.0 points per game (33rd nationally) even while allowing 228 yards through the air and letting opponents stay on schedule at a below-average clip. That gap between scoring defense and the underlying pass numbers is the story for Gabe Giardina's group heading into 2026, with Knai Cook, Nick Sawyer and Canii Tucker all gone from a unit that had learned to bend without breaking. An experienced secondary returns to work under coordinators who will lean on tackling in space and forcing field-goal results rather than chasing takeaways, and whether that formula holds against a full slate of Big South-OVC passing attacks will decide if the point total stays in the 20s or creeps up.
Zach Gordon connected on 8 of 13 field goals with a long of 38 and comes back as the incumbent placekicker, giving Charleston Southern at least one settled piece on this unit. The bigger question is at punter, where Gilbert Brown's 68 punts and 40-yard average walk out the door with no returning statistical replacement on record. Will Laing and Reid Montgomery give Gabe Giardina depth at kicker, but the punting job is the one that will decide whether this group is a net plus or minus in 2026.
Zolten Osborne's 2229 yards and 12 touchdowns walk out the door, and Charleston Southern has to hand the offense to Jared Echols, who has thrown for all of 24 yards in his career. With zero portal arrivals at the position and Hakeem Watters, Mekhi Campfield, Quay Kindell and Nebanye Moore all back to catch and carry the ball, Echols just has to distribute it competently for those returning weapons to matter. Whether he can do that with almost no game tape behind him is the whole swing of this season.
Charleston Southern went 5-7 straight up but bettors who backed Gabe Giardina's team on the road cleaned up, covering at a 71% clip and going 4-2 as road underdogs. That split flips hard at home, where the Buccaneers covered just 40% and went winless against the number as favorites, 0-2. The market has this figured out as a team that plays loose and dangerous away from its own field, and until that home number changes, road value is the play.
