Mike London is banking on Noah Brannock to keep William & Mary punching near .500 despite just 39% returning production, a bet that a ranking of 47 overstates a roster this thin at proven pieces.
Can Noah Brannock produce enough behind a unit that returns just 22.6% of its offensive production, or does William & Mary's ground game and receiving corps get rebuilt around him in real time? The likelier path is a slow start offensively while Brannock and a nearly all-new supporting cast sort out roles, with the defense at 55.1% returning production shouldering more of the load early. That imbalance, not the quarterback change alone, is what determines whether William & Mary stays competitive in the Patriot or takes a step back from 2025's 6-3 conference mark.
The season turns on three road trips: a near-hopeless 2% shot at Duke, a coin-flip-and-a-half test at Lehigh (24%), and a trip to Villanova sitting at just 27%. Everything else on the slate leans William & Mary's way, including home dates against Fordham (81%) and Bucknell (76%) that should pad the record before conference grind sets in. Mike London's group projects to 6-6, and with a schedule ranked 47th for difficulty, how it survives that brutal three-game road stretch, not the home schedule, decides whether this team finishes above or below that mark.

Mike London's 7-5 mark and 6-3 league finish look like a program on the rise, but the margins underneath say otherwise. William & Mary won conference games at a 66.7% clip despite a yardage margin that projects out closer to 49.8%, went 4-3 in one-score games, and banked a plus turnover margin of +6, three separate signs of results running ahead of process. Add an offense that scored efficiently at 12.3 yards per point against a league median of 13.9, the least repeatable half of this equation, and the case for William & Mary is that 2026 corrects back toward the middle rather than building on last year's finish.
William & Mary's offense finished 35th nationally in scoring by leaning on a run game that hit 152 yards a night, but the passing production behind it is largely gone, leaving Noah Brannock projected to take over after throwing for just 188 yards with one interception and no touchdowns in his limited 2025 look. That thin sample is the whole story for 2026, a run-first attack still has its identity but needs Brannock to be more than a game-manager if the Tribe want the offense to match last year's 29.5 points per game. On defense, the pass coverage held up at 15th nationally in yards allowed through the air, but a run defense that gave up 187 yards per game (103rd) is the bigger flaw carrying into next season.
Tyler Hughes takes his 2,330 yards, 20 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions with him, and that efficiency is the hardest part of this offense to replicate. Mike London's attack ranked 33rd nationally in third-down conversion rate and 35th in scoring last season, built on Hughes rarely giving the ball away, so whoever wins the job under center inherits a system that only needs steady decision-making, not a gunslinger, to keep the offense on schedule. The rushing attack (58th in yards per game) already carries some of that load, which should ease the transition for a first-year starter in Williamsburg.
Rashad Raymond's 781 yards and 8 touchdowns walk out the door, and nobody left on the roster has ever carried a real workload behind that production. Josh Miller (48 yards, 1 TD) and Jor'dyn Whitelaw (44 yards) are the closest things to proven commodities, with Jack Zamer, Brayden Smalls and Leon Clark all having touched the ball sparingly at best. William & Mary went 152 yards a game on the ground last season, and Mike London is betting that Miller and Whitelaw can scale up fast enough, with incoming high school signee Nkanta Hines from Thomas Dale adding a fresh body to the room, to keep that number respectable.
Armon Wright's 24 catches were the most productive returning mark in the room, but William & Mary's leading receiver from 2025, Deven Thompson, took his 560 yards and 6 touchdowns out the door, along with Isaiah Lemmond and Damian Harris. That leaves Wright and Joseph Johnson, who combined for just three touchdowns between them last year, to carry a passing game that already sat 59th nationally in passing yards per game. Mike London brings in Mililani product Luke VanAntwerp, but with no proven big-play threat replacing Thompson's production, this offense's third-down efficiency and explosiveness numbers look likely to take a step back before they take a step forward.
Sean McElwain's 12 catches for 186 yards and 3 touchdowns were the tight end room's only real production last season, and he comes back as the clear focal point of a passing game that ranked 59th in yards per play. Haven Mullins caught a touchdown of his own on limited work, and Owen Copeland joins a group that otherwise lost Trey McDonald's modest 3 catches to the portal. William & Mary's offense moved the ball efficiently enough on third downs (42.5%, 33rd nationally) that even a light target share for McElwain could still matter in short-yardage situations, but this remains fundamentally his position group to carry.
Mike London watched his line produce 5.54 yards per play and 152 rushing yards a game a year ago, respectable numbers for a group that now loses five bodies up front in Elijah Booth, Ryan McKenna, Joey Trainor, Greg Klingensmith and Kadin Lynch. That is the entire two-deep from a unit that helped William & Mary rank 33rd nationally in third-down conversion, and replacing that push with unproven pieces is the real test in 2026. If the rushing lanes shrink even modestly, the offense's 35th-ranked scoring output is the first thing to slip.
William & Mary's front held up against the pass, ranking 15th in passing yards allowed per game, but the run defense was the soft spot at 187 yards per game allowed, 103rd nationally, and that's the problem Mike London has to fix up front. The losses of Davin Dzidzienyo and Justin Krueger, each with 3 tackles, are not the kind of production a line can't survive, which puts real weight on the edge spot Tyler Kann arrives to fill after signing out of John Champe. He has no prior college stats to lean on, so the early read on 2026 is whether the run defense number moves before his impact shows up on the stat sheet.
The run defense was the soft spot last season, giving up 187 yards per game on the ground (103rd nationally), even as the pass defense held up well at 180 yards allowed per game (15th). Luke Banbury and Jorden McDonald are both gone from the linebacker corps, taking their combined tackle production with them, which puts real weight on whoever fills the front seven to tighten run fits that let opponents stay on schedule on just 43.9% of snaps allowed (84th). Mike London's defense was middle-of-the-pack in points allowed (25.7 per game, 54th) and yards allowed (367, 53rd), and closing that ground-game gap is the clearest path to pushing those marks up in 2026.
William & Mary's secondary quietly ranked 15th nationally in passing yards allowed per game (180) last season, the strength that keeps this defense afloat while the run fits (103rd against the rush) lag behind. Six defensive backs are gone, including Ethan Yip, Jalen Jones and David Roulley, stripping out tackle production across the back end that Mike London now has to replace on the fly. Cade Ellis arrives from Woodberry Forest to add to an experienced secondary, and how quickly he blends in will decide whether that pass-defense number holds or slips in 2026.
Keegan Shackford made 10 of 12 field goals and put up 72 points last year, and that entire operation walks out the door with him. Sam Braidwood inherits the placekicking job with no game statistics on record, which makes him the biggest unknown Mike London has to settle before Patriot League play tightens. The one certainty is Carter Boyd, who averaged 38.2 yards on 46 punts and gives William & Mary a steady leg while the kicking situation sorts itself out.
Tyler Hughes threw for 2330 yards and 20 touchdowns against just 3 picks, and William & Mary replaces that entire operation with Noah Brannock, whose only varsity resume is 188 yards, zero touchdowns and an interception. With no transfer help coming in and a recruiting class ranked 214th, Brannock has to grow into the job fast, leaning on Armon Wright and Sean McElwain, or the six-win conference mark from 2025 slides backward.
William & Mary went 7-5 straight up but bettors who backed Mike London's team lost money more often than not, covering just 42% overall. The split is stark: 3-3 against the spread at home against a soft 2-4 mark on the road, with road underdog tickets cashing just once in four tries. Conference play was worse for backers, a 3-6 cover mark even as the Tribe won six of nine straight up, meaning most of William & Mary's real wins came without paying off the number.
