MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsSouthern · Clay Hendrix · 6-6 last season · No. 81 in our FCS ratings
Furman ranked 66th in scoring offense and 91st in scoring defense a year ago, and a preseason spot at 81 says nobody expects either side of the ball to close that gap in 2026.
Who takes over the Furman huddle without Trey Hedden calling signals? The roster offers no clear heir with his game experience, and until the transfer portal and signing class fill that void, Clay Hendrix is left piecing together a passing attack from scratch rather than handing it to someone proven. Expect a rocky first half as whoever wins the job learns on the run, with the offense's rhythm dictated by how fast that answer arrives.
Furman's actual season starts with the trip to Tennessee, a game the numbers give it no shot at winning, before the real grind arrives at Tennessee Tech and at Mercer, the two road tests that will decide whether this is a five-win or seven-win team. Everything else on the slate sits close to a coin flip, with Chattanooga at home (57%) and Samford at home (72%) standing out as the rare games Furman should be favored in outright. With a schedule ranked 67th in difficulty, Clay Hendrix's group has enough winnable Southern Conference matchups to stay in the mix, but how it handles that Mercer-Tennessee Tech stretch is what separates a bounce-back year from another .500 finish.

Clay Hendrix went 6-6 and split league play at 4-4, a level, unremarkable ledger for a program that still checks in at No. 81 in the power ratings. That gap between an even record and a middling overall ranking is the story here: Furman is not collapsing, but it is not building toward anything above the middle of the Southern Conference either. Nothing in the results forces a change in direction, so expect Hendrix to keep coaching the same program he has, with an experienced group on hand to try to push that power number up rather than just repeat 6-6.
A 6-6 finish flatters this program more than the tape does. Furman went 2-1 in one-score games and got outgained by 63.2 yards per game in conference play while still winning half of those, the kind of margin that tends to snap back hard, and a minus-9 turnover margin that ranked 110th nationally is more likely to correct upward than the rest of the profile is to hold. The passing attack, which finished 22nd nationally in yards per game, has to carry an offense that needed 14.4 yards for every point scored, and a defense that gave up 415 yards per game cannot keep bailing out a group that converts drives that inefficiently.
Trey Hedden is gone after throwing for 2,967 yards a season ago, taking with him the arm that helped Furman post 250 passing yards per game, 22nd nationally. Clay Hendrix turns to Connor Ackerley, a transfer from Western New Mexico, to run the offense in 2026, betting that a passing attack built around explosive shots can survive the departure of its top producer even without a track record at this level to lean on. The bigger question is whether Ackerley can also jump-start a ground game that managed only 101 rushing yards per game, since Furman cannot count on the same pass-heavy volume carrying a middling 40.9 percent success rate on early downs.
Gavin Hall's 446 yards and 3 touchdowns walk out the door, leaving Furman's ground game to be rebuilt around a run-blocking line that already struggled to move people, with the offense sitting 115th in rushing yards per game a year ago. The passing attack carried the load instead, ranking 22nd in the country in yardage through the air, so Clay Hendrix's staff has every incentive to keep leaning on the arm while the backfield sorts itself out. Christ Presbyterian Academy product Rawls Patterson arrives as a three-star addition with no college stats yet, a projects-forward piece rather than an instant answer for an offense that finished 89th in explosiveness and needs more juice on the ground in 2026.
Furman's passing game ranked 22nd nationally in yards through the air a year ago, but the two hands that did the most damage are both gone: Evan James (65 catches, 796 yards, 7 TD) and Ja'Keith Hamilton (40 catches, 545 yards, 5 TD) combined to eat up the bulk of the targets, and Kerry King's 43 catches leave with them. Tennessee Tech transfer Luke Shields, who caught 6 passes for 179 yards and 3 touchdowns, arrives with the kind of big-play efficiency this passing attack needs to offset a rushing game stuck at 115th nationally. High school signee Cameron James joins the room as well, giving Clay Hendrix a rebuilt set of targets that has to prove it can replicate last season's passing numbers without any of the players who produced them.
Joshua Burrell's 36 catches for 290 yards and 2 scores walk out the door, along with Luke Clyburn's contributions, stripping the tight end room of essentially all its 2025 production. Clay Hendrix turns to Ohio transfer Nick Segarra to fill that gap in a passing game that ranked 22nd nationally in yards per game but still stalled with an 89th-ranked explosiveness mark. Segarra arrives with no prior stats, so how quickly he blends into the passing attack will shape whether Furman's efficient-but-flat offense finds more big plays through the air in 2026.
Furman's ground game managed just 101 yards per game on the ground last season, a number that will fall on a rebuilt front in 2026. Six linemen are out the door, including both departed tackles Jaydon Collins and Davis Watson plus Danny Stein, and guards Ryan Lamb and Luke Petit, gutting the interior and edges alike. Memphis transfer Parker Peterson steps in at tackle, while Cooper Sanders and Jaxon Corey arrive as high school signees to rebuild the interior, and the 250 yards per game through the air last season suggests Clay Hendrix will keep leaning on the pass while this group finds its footing.
Furman's front produced a single sack all of last season, a number that explains why the defense allowed 415 yards and 31.0 points per game and ranked 100th in yards allowed. Clay Hendrix loses four linemen from that group, Joseph Perez-Garibay, Quay Rush, Marc Hernndez and Dylan Chiedo, without any of them having put up statistics that made the box score matter. The unit's 32nd-ranked tackle-for-loss total shows the disruption came more from scheme or the back seven than the line itself, and fixing the pass rush up front is the clearest path to moving off 91st in passing yards allowed.
Furman's defense allowed 415 yards a game last season, 100th nationally, and the linebacker corps that let opponents stay on schedule 43.5% of the time is rebuilding from scratch at the position. Luke McLaughlin, Brandt Babin and Jordan Burrell are all gone, clearing snaps for Braylon Hood, in from Varina, and Preston Patterson, a three-star signee out of Christ Presbyterian Academy, to push for immediate roles under Clay Hendrix. With the run defense already giving up 175 yards a game on the ground, 83rd nationally, whichever of Hood or Patterson wins early reps will be tested fast between the tackles.
Furman's secondary gave up 240 yards a game through the air and let opponents stay on schedule 43.5% of the time, numbers Clay Hendrix is patching with outside help rather than a full overhaul. Yale transfer Joshua Tarver and Air Force transfer Trae Williams come in at safety and corner, while Braylon Peebles arrives as a high school signee out of Cardinal Gibbons to add to the cornerback room. The unit loses tacklers across the back end, but with an experienced secondary still in the fold alongside these additions, the bigger fix has to come against the run, where Furman allowed 175 yards a game on the ground.
Ian Williams took his 13-of-19 kicking and 67 points out the door, and Furman has to replace that production without naming a new placekicker on the current roster. Riley Smith's departure at long snapper adds another piece Clay Hendrix has to sort out on the operations side before either specialist unit settles. Whoever wins those jobs will do so behind an experienced group elsewhere, but the kicking game itself is starting over in 2026.
Trey Hedden threw for 2,967 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, and Furman has no proven passer on the roster to replace that workload heading into 2026. With a 163rd-ranked recruiting class and a net loss in the portal at 6 in, 8 out, the Paladins are not stocking the position with a marquee arrival the way they did at tackle with Parker Peterson, so whoever wins the quarterback job inherits the offense with thin margin for error. If that passing production craters rather than merely dips, a 6-6 team slides toward a losing record fast.
Furman split its home and road results almost evenly straight up, 4-2 and 2-4, but the betting market never trusted either side of it, with bettors covering just 42% overall. The Paladins were consistently worse than the number as home favorites (2-3, 40%) and even shakier as road underdogs (1-3, 25%), a pattern that points to a team whose output rarely matched its price tag in 2025. That gap between line and performance is the real story entering 2026, and until Clay Hendrix's group proves otherwise, the smart read is to fade Furman as a favorite and stay wary chasing it on the road.
