MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsSWAC · Quinn Gray Sr. · 5-7 last season · No. 115 in our FCS ratings
Quinn Gray Sr. is rebuilding a defense that gave up 33.8 points a game (102nd in scoring defense) with a roster picture still hidden behind transfers and signees who have not yet shown up in the data, so the honest projection for Florida A&M sits where the power ratings put it, 115th, until that unit proves otherwise on the field.
Who takes over the quarterback job Florida A&M built around RJ Johnson III? The roster picture for 2026 is unsettled enough that the answer likely comes from outside the building rather than an established face, and until that arrival is confirmed, the offense's identity stays a question mark. Given how thin the verified returning production is at the position, betting on a transfer addition to win the job is the safer read than expecting an incumbent to simply slide in.
The trip to Miami is a paycheck game FAMU has no shot at, but the real season starts on the road at Alabama State and Jackson State, where the Rattlers sit as clear underdogs in games that will decide whether this is a SWAC contender or a middling .500 club. A soft middle stretch, home dates against Alabama A&M, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Southern and Mississippi Valley State, gives Quinn Gray Sr. a runway to bank wins before those road tests. With the schedule ranked 104th nationally in difficulty, the projected 4-8 mark says the margin for error on the road is thin and the neutral-site swing games against South Carolina State and Bethune-Cookman could easily tip either way.

Florida A&M's 5-7 mark last season flattered the roster more than it revealed it: the Rattlers won at a 50.0% clip in conference play despite a yardage margin that only supported 40.8%, and a defense giving up points on just 11.1 yards per scoring drive against a 13.9 league median was the real culprit, not bad luck. None of that was propped up by turnovers, which were roughly neutral, so there is no puncher's-chance variance left to hide behind heading into 2026. The projected 4-8 finish under Quinn Gray Sr. reads right given a schedule ranked 104th in difficulty and a defense that let teams score too cheaply, and the floor is the likelier outcome than any bounce-back push toward the postseason field.
Quinn Gray Sr. closed 2025 at 5-7, splitting conference play at 4-4, but the No. 115 power rating tells the harsher version of that story, a roster still built to survive the SWAC rather than control it. The record was fine, the underlying talent gap was not, and that mismatch is the real entry point for 2026. Nothing in these numbers points to a program that outperformed its ceiling, so the burden falls on whatever talent Gray adds this offseason to actually close the gap between result and rating.
Florida A&M went 4-4 in conference play a season ago despite an actual win rate that outran what its yardage margin against league opponents implied, the kind of gap that tends to close rather than repeat. The offense scored efficiently, needing just 13.9 yards per point, but the defense gave points away cheaply at 11.1 yards allowed per point and finished 106th in keeping opponents off schedule, a real problem that outweighs a near-neutral turnover margin. Quinn Gray Sr. is left patching a defense that ranked 102nd in points allowed with a passing attack, 30th nationally, that has to keep outscoring problems the run game and stop unit did not solve.
RJ Johnson threw for just 183 yards last season, and both quarterbacks on the 2025 roster - RJ Johnson and RJ Johnson III - are gone, leaving Florida A&M to build behind center almost from scratch even though the passing game around them ranked 30th nationally in yards per game. The answer is Jaylen Johnson, a three-star arrival from Thomas County Central with no college stats yet on file, stepping into an offense that already flashed explosiveness (14th nationally in that category) but bogged down on third down at a 38.8% clip. If Jaylen Johnson can protect the ball better than the low-volume passing FAMU got last year, the pieces are there for the yards-per-play number (5.77, 41st) to translate into more points than the 24.3 per game FAMU averaged in 2025.
Thad Franklin Jr. is gone after carrying 720 yards and 6 touchdowns, and Florida A&M replaces that production with Vanderbilt transfer Chase Gillespie, whose 2 yards on his ledger say nothing about what he can do with real carries in Tallahassee. The bigger issue is scheme fit: this offense already ran for just 129 yards per game (88th nationally) while leaning on a 239-yard passing attack (30th), so Gillespie steps into a run game that was an afterthought behind quarterback production. If Quinn Gray Sr. wants the offense to look different than last year's 5.77 yards-per-play, pass-heavy identity, the ground game has to become more than a change-up, and that burden now sits on a back who has barely touched the ball at this level.
Kenari Wilcher's 34 catches for 552 yards and 4 touchdowns and Goldie Lawrence's 27-catch, 420-yard season are both gone, wiping out the bulk of the production from a passing game that still ranked 30th nationally in yards per game and flashed explosiveness (1.39 per successful play, 14th nationally). Florida A&M answers that hole with Florida transfer Mike Peterson Jr., a 3-star addition with no college stats yet on record, leaning on Quinn Gray Sr. to plug him into an offense that moved the ball efficiently but converted at only a 38.6% success rate. The passing numbers say this group can still fly downfield, but replacing Wilcher's production with an unproven transfer is the swing factor for 2026.
Miles Campbell's 21 catches, 305 yards and 2 touchdowns walk out the door, leaving a real hole in an offense that already leaned on efficiency over volume through the air, ranking 30th nationally in passing yards per game but just 78th in success rate. Quinn Gray Sr. still has a passing attack averaging 5.77 yards per play, and whoever settles in at tight end just needs to keep the seams open for that same downfield rhythm rather than replace Campbell's exact production. The bigger swing factor is whether the ground game, stuck at 88th in rushing yards per game, can take enough pressure off the passing lanes that a retooled tight end room isn't asked to do more than it's built for.
Florida A&M moved the ball efficiently in 2025, ranking 30th nationally in passing yards per game and 14th in explosiveness, but the ground game lagged at 88th in rushing yards per game, and the group that paved those lanes is almost entirely turning over with eight offensive linemen departed, including Charles Davis, Ashton Grable and Christopher Williams. Quinn Gray Sr. now has to rebuild that room with three new pieces, Jordan Davis, Corbett Yarbrough and Iggy Zulaica, none of whom have played a college snap yet. If the rushing numbers dip further before this trio gels, the passing attack will be asked to carry even more of the offense's 24.3 points per game.
A defense that gave up 6.24 yards per play a year ago (101st nationally) loses its whole front rotation, with Stantavious Smith, Jahon Myers, Latarie Kinsler, Nicholas Dimitris and Cameron Donald among 11 linemen out the door. Quinn Gray Sr. turned to the portal for Caden Brown, a Syracuse edge transfer, and to the high school ranks for Roderick McFadden, a signee out of Miami Northwestern, to start restocking the trenches. Neither arrives with a track record that moves the needle yet, so the more realistic path to fixing a rushing defense that allowed 181 yards per game runs through the experienced faces already in the room rather than the newcomers.
Florida A&M's defense let opponents stay on schedule at a 106th-ranked clip in 2025, and the linebacker corps that failed to slow anybody down is nearly unrecognizable for 2026, with six departures including Brian Norris, Nay'Ron Jenkins, Justice Cross, Malcolm Major and Chance Coleman all gone. Denzel Johnson arrives from Alabama State off a 4-tackle 2025 season to help rebuild a group tasked with fixing a run defense that allowed 181 yards per game on the ground. Quinn Gray Sr. is betting on transfer continuity over name recognition here, and whether Johnson can anchor the middle quickly will decide if FAMU's 6.24 yards-per-play problem gets solved or repeats itself.
A secondary that let opponents pick up 228 yards a game through the air and 6.24 yards per snap overall now turns over almost its entire two-deep, with Jalik Thomas, Tequan Latimore, Corey Collier Jr., T.J. Huggins and Ah'Mare Lee among 12 defensive backs gone from a defense that ranked 106th in keeping opponents off schedule. Jason Duclona arrives from East Tennessee State to compete at corner after a modest 2025 snap count there, which means Quinn Gray Sr. is leaning on an experienced group of holdovers to steady the room while Duclona and any newcomers work into the rotation. Given how often FAMU's defense broke down on schedule-down plays in 2025, the pass defense numbers hold up only if that returning corps tackles better in space than last year's group did.
Daniel Porto's departure leaves a real void, since he hit 15 of 16 field goals with a 51-yard long and put up 66 points last season, and Robert Engstler's 46.7-yard average on his six punts was hardly a liability either. Quinn Gray Sr. now has to sort out both specialist jobs at once, and the long-snapper spot behind Jack Carson-Wentz is unsettled too. Florida A&M's kicking game was a quiet asset in 2025, and turning that accuracy and hang time over to unproven legs is the swing factor for these units in 2026.
Florida A&M brought in Chase Gillespie from Vanderbilt to jumpstart a backfield that produced almost nothing through the air last fall once RJ Johnson III's numbers evaporated, and with only 197th-ranked incoming talent, there is little margin for the run game to stall. Nine players walked out the portal door against just five arrivals, so Gillespie has to be the workhorse from day one rather than share touches, and how quickly he settles into that lead role decides whether this offense finds any rhythm in 2026.
Florida A&M bettors got burned all year, covering just 27% of the time against a spread that mostly had this 5-7 team pegged correctly. The market actually undersold Quinn Gray Sr.'s club on the road, where FAMU went 3-2 straight up but still only covered 40% of the time, meaning even wins came ugly or expected. The worst signal is the week after a loss, where FAMU covered just once in five tries, a pattern that says this team does not respond well to adversity and shouldn't be trusted to bounce back straight up either.
