William Atkins IV takes back an offense that scored 32.4 points a game and brings 80% of its production with him, which is exactly why the 41st-ranked outlook entering 2026 undersells a team that closed last season 25th in the FCS Coaches Poll and still has to answer for a defense that gave up 27.2 a game.
Can William Atkins IV spread the ball around enough to cover for Jordan Smith's 900 yards and 8 scores? With 83.3% of the defense back to keep games close and Atkins already the projected quarterback after last year's 10-3, 5-0 run, the offense should lean on that continuity rather than one alpha receiver. The bigger truth is South Carolina State does not need a replacement for Smith so much as a full season of Atkins settling into the job.
South Carolina State comes off a 10-3 run and an unbeaten conference mark, but the schedule rank of 119 tells the real story: Chennis Berry's group won't find much resistance until three specific trips. The road stretch at Charleston Southern (53%) and at Furman (56%) are true coin-flip tests, with a trip to Bethune-Cookman (61%) not far behind, and those three games will decide whether this projects as more than a 7-5 team. Everything else, from the neutral-site date with Florida A&M to home dates against Norfolk State and Delaware State, sets up as the kind of should-win football that padded last year's record but won't tell Berry much about where his roster actually stands.

Chennis Berry closed 2025 by running the table in league play, a perfect 5-0 mark that carried South Carolina State to a 10-3 finish and a top-tier national ranking among the sport's best programs. That kind of season, paired with an undefeated conference slate, is the strongest currency a coach can bring into the next year. Berry heads into 2026 having already answered the biggest question a program can ask of its coach: can it win the games in front of it, and this staff did.
South Carolina State went unbeaten in conference play a year ago, but the underlying numbers say that record flattered them badly. A 5-1 mark in one-score games and a plus turnover margin are exactly the kind of results that rarely repeat, and the yardage margin the Bulldogs actually posted in league play implied a far shakier win rate than the one they got. The passing game (281 yards per game, 8th nationally) and a defense that kept 35.5% of opponent plays on schedule (5th nationally) are real, but incoming transfer Jayden Fuller arrives into a team that needs those strengths to carry more weight now that the close-game luck is due to run out.
William Atkins IV is the projected starter after throwing for 2319 yards and 16 touchdowns against just 4 interceptions, the engine behind a passing attack that ranked 8th nationally in yards per game at 281. Chennis Berry's offense leaned on that efficiency, converting 48.0% of third downs (9th nationally) even though the ground game lagged at 84th in rushing yards per game. Ryan Stubblefield, who threw for 1290 yards and 7 touchdowns, gives Atkins a proven backup, while Bryce Bowens and Tyron Moore round out a room built around continuity at the position heading into 2026.
Tyler Smith carried the load with 512 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns, and he is back to anchor a ground game that lagged its own passing attack, ranking 84th nationally while South Carolina State's air raid finished 8th in passing yards per game. Josh Shaw (255 yards, 3 TD) and KZ Adams (243 yards, 1 TD) return behind him, giving Chennis Berry a proven three-man rotation even as Jaden Daley, Kacy Fields and Naahzeikiel Mays arrive without a statistical track record yet. The offense's 48.0% third down rate and 43.4% success rate suggest the passing game will keep carrying this attack, but Smith staying efficient on early downs is what lets that formula work again in 2026.
Jalen Johnson's 52 catches for 622 yards give Chennis Berry a proven possession target, but the 900-yard, 8-touchdown production Jordan Smith put up last season walks out the door along with Deyandre Ruffin's 446 yards. That leaves Nigel Johnson, whose 11 catches went for 295 yards and 3 scores, as the clearest big-play answer in an offense that finished 8th nationally in passing yards per game. Malik Brightwell, DaeMon Cherry and Britton Holmes arrive without a catch on record, so the passing attack's explosiveness in 2026 rests on how quickly Nigel Johnson can turn efficient targets into the chunk plays Smith used to provide.
John Grant is back after a modest 2-catch, 8-yard season, joined by Dylan Boone and Nicholas Brown, neither of whom has logged a stat line yet in this offense. That production gap barely matters given how this passing attack operates, an 8th-ranked passing game at 281 yards per game that leans on its receivers and backs rather than needing tight ends as primary targets. Chennis Berry's offense hit 32.4 points per game largely through the air, so unless Boone or Brown emerges as a new option, the tight end spot stays a complementary blocking piece rather than a focal point in 2026.
A line that allowed 13 sacks but still helped spring an 8th-ranked passing attack at 281 yards a game gave Chennis Berry a solid platform, and the loss of tackle Chevy Trask Jr. is the one hole that actually matters up front. The ground game never matched the air raid, ranking just 84th in rushing yards per game at 131, so the pass protection carries even more weight now that Trask is gone. Whether this group can push that 43.4% success rate higher will decide if the offense stays explosive or leans on the arm alone.
A defense that held opponents to 134 yards on the ground and kept 35.5% of snaps on schedule, good for 5th nationally, did its damage up front, and Jayden Fuller arrives via transfer to keep that identity intact for 2026. The rushing numbers back up the eye test, 33rd in yards per play allowed, and Fuller's job is simply not letting that slip while Chennis Berry reloads the room. If the interior holds, South Carolina State's whole defensive picture, from the 339 yards allowed per game to the scoring number that lagged the rest of the profile at 27.2 a game, keeps trending toward the stingier side rather than the softer one.
A defense that kept 35.5 percent of opponent snaps behind schedule, fifth nationally, gets rebuilt at linebacker through the portal rather than around a returning name. Jayden Fuller arrives from Miami (OH), where he posted 6 tackles, 2 sacks and 2 TFL last season, joined by Derrick McCormick Jr. from South Florida and Marquis Lane-Owens from App State to replace departed Dedrick Starkes. Chennis Berry is betting that three transfers can sustain a run defense that already ranked 33rd in the country in yards allowed per carry, not reinvent it.
Brenyen Scott's 15 tackles topped a secondary that helped South Carolina State hold opponents to 339 yards a game, good for 26th nationally, while the pass defense allowed just 205 yards per game. Shamari Reed and Charles Arnold both return to anchor that group, but the loss of Jarod Washington's 16 tackles still has to be absorbed somewhere. Western Carolina transfer Zayveon Wells arrives to fill that void at safety, and if he clicks with Brayln Oliver and Jabin Ford, the back end stays a strength for a defense that already ranked 6th nationally in tackles for loss.
Elliott Janish's leg was a weapon in 2025, dropping 59 punts for a 42.7-yard average that flipped fields for a team that went 10-3 and swept the MEAC. He is back, and so is placekicker Cedric Oglesby, giving Chennis Berry a settled specialist corps rather than one he has to piece together. With snapper duties covered by both Konner Lucas and Nickolas Smalls and Maxceon Cobb also in the punting mix, the operation behind Janish's leg carries no uncertainty into 2026.
William Atkins IV threw for 2,319 yards and 16 touchdowns against just 4 interceptions last year, and with Jordan Smith's 900-yard, 8-touchdown production gone from the receiving corps, how much of that passing game he can keep churning through Jalen Johnson (52 catches, 622 yards) decides whether South Carolina State's offense stays explosive. Ryan Stubblefield gives Chennis Berry a proven backup arm, but this is Atkins' offense to run, and his efficiency without his top target is the swing factor for a team that just went 5-0 in conference.
South Carolina State went 5-0 straight up at home in 2025 but covered just once in four tries as a home favorite, meaning Chennis Berry's crew won those games the way books expected and then some slack got squeezed out anyway. The number to build a 2026 wager around is the MEAC slate itself, where the Bulldogs went 4-1 against the spread at 80 percent in conference play while steamrolling league foes straight up. Load up on South Carolina State once it hits conference play, but think twice about penciling them in as a big home chalk again.
