MVFC · 8-5 in 2025Youngstown State Penguins7-4 projected · srs #13 · 51% returningDoug PhillipsCAA · Mark Nofri · 8-4 last season · No. 74 in our FCS ratings
Jack Snyder heads into 2026 as the settled answer at quarterback for an offense that already cracked 28.6 points a game, and with 76% of last year's production intact, the No. 74 power rating undersells a team built to push into the mid-60s.
Can Jack Snyder turn a good offense into the reason Sacred Heart tops last year's 8-4 mark instead of just repeating it. With 76.4% of the offensive production back and Snyder already the proven answer at quarterback, the more likely outcome is a team that scores enough to win the games it lost close a year ago rather than one that stalls out again. The variable is not talent or continuity, both of which are already banked, it is whether Snyder's growth translates the returning pieces into a jump in the standings.
Coming off an 8-4 season and a projected step back to 5-6, Sacred Heart's fate gets decided away from home. Trips to Massachusetts (17% win) and Monmouth (28% win) are the two games most likely to sink the year, with a visit to Elon (35%) close behind as the third real test. Mark Nofri's group gets softer spots to bank wins against Hampton (81%) and Stonehill (68%) at home, but stacking three low-probability road tests in the same stretch is what will actually decide whether 2026 looks like last year's finish or a real drop-off.

Mark Nofri closed out 2025 at 8-4 and opened conference play with a win, the kind of season that keeps a program's foundation steady heading into 2026. Sacred Heart sits at 74th in the ratings, a middling national number that undersells a staff that has the Pioneers winning consistently within the CAA. There is nothing dramatic to unpack here, just a coach whose team performs above its national profile and a league record that starts the new year on the right foot.
Sacred Heart's offense was built on legs, not arms, ranking 5th nationally in rushing yards per game at 219 while sitting 102nd in passing at just 168 per game, and that split doesn't change with Jack Snyder back at quarterback after throwing for 1857 yards and 11 touchdowns against only 3 interceptions. The efficiency numbers back the run-heavy formula, with the offense hitting on 46.5% of plays and converting 46.8% of third downs, both top-15 marks nationally, even though the passing game rarely stretches the field. The bigger question is defense, where a unit that allowed 6.24 yards per play (102nd) and 187 rushing yards per game (101st) has to find stops to match what Snyder and the ground game are already doing on the other side.
Jack Snyder's 1,857 yards and 11 touchdowns last fall came inside an offense that leaned on the run (219 yards per game, 5th nationally) far more than his arm, with Sacred Heart's passing attack sitting 102nd. That imbalance is the real story for 2026, Snyder is back as the established starter, but the offense's identity was built on the ground game and third-down efficiency (46.8%, 13th) rather than through him. If Mark Nofri wants a more dangerous attack, the explosiveness number (1.26, 68th) needs to climb, and that means asking Snyder to do more than manage a run-first system that already worked at 28.6 points per game.
Mitchell Summers is the whole engine here, coming off a 1071-yard, 12-touchdown season that anchored a rushing attack ranked 5th nationally in yards per game. Chuck Webb returns as a proven complementary piece with 254 yards and 4 scores, giving Mark Nofri a two-man backfield that does not need to replace its identity even with Trey Eberhart III and his 484 yards gone. With Summers churning out that kind of volume and Webb spelling him, Sacred Heart can keep leaning on the ground game while the 168 yards per game passing attack, 102nd nationally, sorts itself out.
Jason Palmieri (34 catches, 354 yards, 4 TD) and Dean Hangey (28-317-3) are the proven pieces in a passing game that ranked just 102nd nationally in yards per game, even as Sacred Heart's ground attack (219 yards per game, 5th nationally) did the heavy lifting. Payton Rhoades' 41 catches and 519 yards are the bigger question mark to replace, along with Kevin McGuire's 320 yards, but Mark Nofri does not need the passing game to carry this offense so much as complement it. With Palmieri and Hangey both back and the run game elite, the more efficient path for 2026 is leaning further into what already works rather than forcing this receiving corps into a featured role.
Jimmy Casey's five catches produced two touchdowns, and he headlines a tight end room that returns almost entirely intact behind a rushing attack that ranked 5th nationally in yards per game. Logan Lyson adds six more catches back to the fold, and with Charlie Chisholm, Brendan Errity, Aidan Eves and Chris Leggett all still in the mix, Mark Nofri has bodies who know the offense even without much of a receiving track record among them. The bigger issue is a passing game that ranked 102nd in yards per game, so any real growth from this group likely comes as a blocking upgrade for that 219-yard rushing attack rather than a receiving jump.
Sacred Heart's ground game piled up 219 yards a game, fifth-most in the country, but the group that opened those holes is largely gone, with five of the room's names departed, including Cole De Magistris, Blaise Heshler and Gianni Principato. Jackson Babitsky, Jake Beam, Christian Blackwell, Gregory Celestin Jr. and Chase DeSanto are the returning names Mark Nofri leans on to keep that run identity intact, but with that much of the interior turned over, the passing game that already sat 102nd in yards per game cannot afford early growing pains up front. The bet here is the rushing attack stays the calling card while the new-look line finds its footing in protection.
Sacred Heart's front gave up 187 rushing yards a game and 6.24 yards per play, marks that ranked 101st and 102nd nationally, so the run defense was the soft spot even in an 8-4 season. Kevin Bright, Roderick Campbell, Ayomide Cooper, Mitchell Donkor, Will Dunn and Lukas Elliot all return to that group, but Ron Cole, Aboubakare Dabo, Quincy Eutsay, Matt Garrett and Bayo Gbowu are gone, a lot of the bodies who played into that 187-yard number. If this line is going to move off 102nd in yards per play, it happens through the returners already in the room rather than a spring makeover.
Kyle Hall and Myles Hamilton are back after modest pass-catching numbers out of the backfield, but the linebacker corps that Sacred Heart trots out in 2026 is really defined by what it did against the run last season, allowing 187 rushing yards a game, 101st nationally, on a defense that also gave up 6.24 yards per play, 102nd. That's the problem Josiah Aidoo, Evan Alcide, Gio Boone and Tom Costigan have to fix as they step into larger roles, and the pass defense numbers, 201 yards allowed per game and 38th nationally, show this unit can hold up when it isn't getting gouged on the ground. Elijah Nyahkoon and Nick Verbitsky are gone, but the group Mark Nofri has on hand still needs to tighten the run fits more than it needs new faces.
Logan Booker, Amier Burdine, Charlie Bywalski, Ashton Davis, Zac Fearon and Sody Gantt all return to a secondary that finished 38th nationally in passing yards allowed, the clear strength of a defense that struggled far more against the run at 101st. That pass coverage held up even as Miles Ellis, Jahqir Haley, Tyler Jameson, Eli Jordan and Maximus Mongelli all departed, so the six-man group left intact should keep Sacred Heart's back end from being the problem in 2026. The bigger question for Mark Nofri's defense sits up front against the run, not with this cornerback and safety group.
Matt Kling's 10-of-13 kicking and 69 points walk out the door, along with Michael Sbuttoni's 43.8-yard punting average, leaving Mark Nofri to replace both specialists at once. Ryan Bocklet returns as the incumbent placekicker but carries a blank slate of 0-for-0 on field goals, so his 2026 workload will actually define what this kicking game is rather than confirm it. Jack Hayes and Jack O'Sullivan are both back at punter without prior statistics on file, and with three returning long snappers in Andrew Boyle, Patrick Knewitz and Ryan Lukis, the snap operation is stable even as the actual kicking and punting numbers have to be built from scratch.
Sacred Heart barely blinks at losing Trey Eberhart III's 484 yards because Mitchell Summers already banked 1,071 yards and 12 touchdowns of his own in 2025. With Jack Snyder back after throwing for 1,857 yards and no additions arriving via the portal, Summers becomes the offense's engine rather than a complement, and how much he can shoulder as the clear lead back will decide whether Sacred Heart's ground game still terrifies the CAA.
Sacred Heart's split is a study in contrasts under Mark Nofri: 6-0 straight up at home but just 2-3 against the number there, including a 1-3 mark as a home favorite that shows a team that wins comfortable spots without covering them. Flip the venue and the number and the Pioneers turn into live dogs, going 4-2 on the road and 4-2 as a road underdog, cashing tickets even in three straight-up losses to ranked opponents (2-1 against the spread). The lesson for 2026 bettors is simple, fade Sacred Heart as a chalky home favorite and back them when they travel as the underdog.
