Southland 2026 Season Preview

SFA's Race to Lose

Stephen F. Austin sits alone at the top, projected No. 5 nationally and 9-3, a full tier above everyone else in this league, and the preseason math has them running back to the title game. SE Louisiana profiles as the clear chaser at No. 21 nationally, but the gap to the field behind that is thin and messy, with Lamar (No. 31), Incarnate Word (No. 33) and Nicholls (No. 60) bunched close enough that any of them could scramble into the second slot. This is not an open race at the top, it is SFA and a scramble for the other title-game seat, and the projections still land SE Louisiana in Stephen F. Austin's way in the championship.

Stephen F. Austin Sets the Bar

Stephen F. Austin claims four preseason all-conference spots, more than any other Southland program, pairing receivers Clayton Wayland and Derrick Bohler with linebacker Eli Ennis and safety Avyonne Jones. McNeese counters with quarterback Jake Strong running the offense and a linebacker duo in Landon Barrett and Emauri Sibley anchoring the defense. Beyond those two, the picks scatter across eight different schools, from Incarnate Word's Jaylon Spears and Walt Gray to Nicholls placing both Jhamal Shelby Jr. and Ethan Lee in the secondary, a sign this league's talent is spread wide rather than concentrated at the top.

Talent Spread Across the Southland

No program monopolizes the Southland's best rooms for 2026, but McNeese comes closest by claiming two of the seven top spots, with quarterback Jake Strong and linebacker Landon Barrett anchoring the most returning production at their positions. The rest of the league's premier talent is scattered rather than concentrated: SE Louisiana holds down both the backfield with Deantre Jackson and tight end with Lonnie Shinn, while Stephen F. Austin's Clayton Wayland tops the receiver rooms. Northwestern State's Braden Woods and Nicholls' Jhamal Shelby Jr. give those programs their own case for defensive strength up front and on the back end. That distribution suggests the Southland's balance of power runs through McNeese's two-way returning core, but no single roster has cornered the league's talent.
