Bowles, Year Five

Todd Bowles is back for a fifth year after a season that ended below .500. An 8-9 finish, with the Buccaneers second in a NFC South the Panthers won at the same 3-3 in-division mark, is not a disaster but it is not proof of anything either. The offense turned drives into points at exactly the league rate, finishing at 14.3 yards per point against a 14.3 median, so there is no hidden edge here to lose. The defense is the tougher watch, letting opponents score cheaply at 13.9 yards allowed per point against a 14.4 league median, a real soft spot rather than misfortune. Bowles has stayed the course through four years; whether that offensive efficiency holds up will say more about 2026 than the record did about 2025.

Mayfield Without the Margin

Baker Mayfield had a productive 2025, but the offense around him finished 21st in total yards and 25th in yards per play. That gap is the story for 2026. Tampa Bay needed 14.3 yards per point scored, exactly the league median, so there was no hidden finishing edge propping up the scoring, just a middling offense converting at a middling rate. The bigger concern sits on defense, which allowed points cheaply at 13.9 yards per point against a 14.4 median, a real vulnerability rather than a fluke. Mayfield will likely need more than 320 yards a game of support to lift this unit above where the volume numbers already place it.

Baker Mayfield threw for 3,693 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2025, and Tampa Bay had little reason to look past him. That stability matters more now that Jake Browning has arrived from the Bengals to back him up, replacing the departed Teddy Bridgewater. Browning's 771 yards and 8 interceptions came in just five games last year, a small sample that says little either way. Connor Bazelak and Jalon Daniels round out the depth chart behind Mayfield. None of it changes the math here: this offense goes as Mayfield goes, and at $27M he is paid like the answer, not a placeholder.

Bucky Irving is the back Tampa Bay wants to build around, even after his 588 yards came in just 10 games. Rachaad White's 572 yards and Jase McClellan are both out the door, but this room does not lack bodies to replace them. Kenny Gainwell, the highest-paid back here at $7M, put up 537 yards and 5 touchdowns for Pittsburgh, and Sean Tucker's 7 touchdowns on 320 yards suggest a real short-yardage role. That kind of scoring rate from a complementary back matters more given the offense ranked 21st in rushing yards per game. Todd Bowles is not looking for a lead horse so much as a way to make this committee more efficient than it was in 2025.

Emeka Egbuka's 63 catches for 938 yards make him the clear focal point after Mike Evans and Sterling Shepard both departed. Tez Johnson chips in after five touchdowns on just 322 yards, a big-play rate worth watching again. Chris Godwin Jr., the highest-paid receiver in the room at $22M, played only 9 of 17 games and needs a fuller season to justify that number. Jalen McMillan appeared in just 4 games, so his 178 yards on 12 catches reads more like a preview than a settled role. Cade Otton is the whole story here, a $10M security blanket coming off 59 catches and 572 yards for an offense that finished 20th in passing yards per game. Nobody else in the room has proven anything close to that in a Buccaneers uniform, with Devin Culp, Payne Durham and Ko Kieft combining for a handful of catches between them. Tampa Bay used a sixth-round pick on Bauer Sharp out of LSU, a low-cost bet to add a body behind Otton rather than a threat to his role. Lavonte David is gone after 112 tackles last year, and Tampa Bay answered by importing two ready-made replacements rather than promoting from within. Christian Rozeboom arrives off a 119-tackle season with the Panthers, and Alex Anzalone, the room's top earner at $9M, piled up 95 tackles for Detroit; both step directly into the middle of this defense alongside SirVocea Dennis, who posted 96 tackles in 16 games. Yaya Diaby's 7 sacks and 13 tackles for loss give the group its pass-rush identity off the edge, but 37 total sacks ranked just 18th, and that gap is the real question for 2026. Josiah Trotter, a round-two pick out of Missouri, joins a room that already ran 99 rushing yards allowed per game, 5th-best in the league, so the ground-stopping identity should hold even as the sack production needs to climb.

Tykee Smith and Antoine Winfield Jr. give Tampa Bay a physical, ball-hawking safety pair, with Winfield's 93 tackles and Smith's 99 anchoring the back end. The corner room churned hard this offseason, with Jamel Dean and Christian Izien both gone after combining for production the incoming group has to replace. Jacob Parrish and Zyon McCollum return to man the outside spots, while Benjamin Morrison adds depth after appearing in 9 games. Ifeatu Melifonwu arrives from Miami off a 52-tackle, one-interception season and should slot in immediately as a rotational piece. Passing defense finished 27th in yards allowed per game a year ago, so the pressure is really on the pass rush up front, but this secondary has more proven tacklers than its reputation suggests.

Chase McLaughlin made 32 of 38 field goals in 2025, and now he shares kicking duties with B.T. Potter. That is an unusual arrangement for a team that otherwise has stability at specialist. Riley Dixon, the highest-paid player in this room at $3M, kept booming punts to a 40.2 net average, and Evan Deckers remains the long snapper of record. Scott Daly arrives from the Bears to snap as well, which reads less like an open competition and more like Tampa Bay hedging its bets at a position it rarely thinks about. Up front, Al-Quadin Muhammad adds an 11-sack season from Detroit, while A'Shawn Robinson and Rakeem Nunez-Roches restock the interior after Logan Hall's departure. The receiver room takes the bigger hit, losing both Mike Evans and Sterling Shepard, but this section of the roster reads like a defense betting that two proven linebackers beat one irreplaceable one.

Irving's Health Decides It

Bucky Irving played in only 10 of 17 games last season and still put up 588 yards, and Tampa Bay's offense simply looks different when he is on the field. Kenny Gainwell arrives from Pittsburgh off 537 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns, but that was a complementary role, not a lead-back workload. Baker Mayfield operated behind that ground game, and a healthy Irving takes pressure off him against defenses geared to stop Emeka Egbuka. Every projection here assumes Irving stays on the field.
