AFC East 2026 Season Preview

Patriots Hold the Edge

New England sits atop the division at No. 6 in the league, and a projected 10-7 mark makes the Patriots the clear favorite. Buffalo is not far behind at No. 8 and projected for 9-8, close enough that the gap barely qualifies as one. That is where the real race lives, not further down. Miami projects to 7-10 at No. 28 and the Jets trail at 6-11 and No. 32, both facing a much longer climb back into contention.

Jets Own the Trenches

The Jets place six players on the preseason all-division team, and nearly all of them sit on the defensive side, with Will McDonald IV, Joseph Ossai and Jowon Briggs anchoring the front and Demario Davis and Jamien Sherwood backing them up at linebacker. That tilt tells the real story here: New England supplies the offensive spine through Drake Maye, A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs and Hunter Henry, while the Jets are built to strangle offenses rather than score with them. Buffalo and Miami split the rest almost evenly, with James Cook III and Khalil Shakir for the Bills against Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson and De'Von Achane for the Dolphins. No club dominates both sides, which is exactly why this division should stay a fight in the trenches as much as through the air.

Patriots Own the Skill Spots

Drake Maye and A.J. Brown give New England the division's top room at quarterback and receiver, the only club with two No. 1 groups. That's a passing-game foundation nobody else in the division matches. Buffalo counters on the ground, with James Cook III and Dalton Kincaid topping the backfield and tight end rooms, a reminder the Bills still build around movement pieces rather than a true number one target. The defensive edge belongs to the Jets, whose front of Will McDonald IV and secondary led by Nahshon Wright both rank first, while Miami's answer is a single standout linebacker room fronted by Jordyn Brooks. Spread across four different clubs, the division's best rooms show no single team has cornered the talent.
