Questions
Who is No. 1 in the 2026-27 preseason ratings?
Duke, at +20.7 points per 100 possessions better than an average team, then Michigan, Arizona and Houston.
What are college basketball efficiency ratings?
Points scored and allowed per 100 possessions instead of per game, so a slow team and a fast team are measured the same way, then adjusted for the strength of every opponent and for home court. The difference between the two is the efficiency margin, the single number teams are ranked by.
How is this different from KenPom and Bart Torvik?
KenPom (kenpom.com) is Ken Pomeroy's subscription site and the best-known ratings of this kind; Bart Torvik's T-Rank (barttorvik.com) is a free one built the same way. These are our own, free, built on the same idea from each game's box score: possessions are field goal attempts minus offensive rebounds plus turnovers plus 0.475 of free throw attempts. The method's details differ, so the numbers are close to KenPom's and Torvik's but not the same.
What do AdjO, AdjD, AdjEM and AdjT mean?
AdjO is points scored per 100 possessions against an average defense, AdjD points allowed per 100 against an average offense (lower is better), AdjEM the margin between them, and AdjT possessions per game against an average opponent. The Division I average is 105.0 points per 100 and 68.0 possessions.
How are the ratings set before the season?
From last season's results, pulled 40% of the way back toward average for roster turnover. They count as 5 games, so by mid-December this season's games carry most of the weight.
