North Carolina DC Steve Belichick resigns following program probe

North Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Belichick has resigned following the university's independent investigation into the football program's culture and climate. The probe found "isolated" disregard for values and standards of conduct.

The school said in a statement Thursday that "these actions were isolated in scope and not a systemic failure." UNC said all necessary corrective actions are now underway and will be overseen by Carolina Athletics and the Office of University Counsel, and with those actions the university considers the investigation resolved.

Belichick, 39, is the son of head coach Bill Belichick and served as defensive coordinator under his father at North Carolina last season. He also spent time with his dad on the New England Patriots' staff. Belichick will officially leave the program on Oct. 27, following the conclusion of his medical leave.

UNC had announced in July that general manager Michael Lombardi was placed on administrative leave while an investigation into his conduct was underway. Lombardi resigned on Sept. 3.

UNC also said freshman wide receiver Keeyun Chapman has been suspended indefinitely after he was arrested Tuesday night during a traffic stop for carrying a concealed handgun. UNC said Chapman's suspension, like the actions resulting from the investigation, reflects the university's commitment to accountability and the well-being of its student athletes.
