Washington State receiver Tony Freeman has suffered a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season, coach Kirby Moore announced Monday. Freeman suffered the injury in the Cougars' season-opening loss to Washington and will have surgery.
Freeman, who also served as Washington State's kick-return specialist, was the team's top returning receiver after catching 54 passes for 590 yards and three touchdowns last season. He ranked sixth nationally in kick returns, averaging a school-record 17.3 yards.
"We're all going to be there to support Tony through this," Moore said. "And for him, I think he has the potential to come back with the new 5-for-5 rule for another season here at Washington State."
Darrius Clemons, Daniel Blood and Branden Ganashamoorthy are expected to see more targets in Freeman's absence.
In other injury news, defensive end Michael Hughes will be out a couple weeks after suffering a knee injury in last week's loss to Kansas State. Starting cornerbacks Jalil Tucker, who has an undisclosed injury, and Khamari Terrell, who has a concussion, did not play against Kansas State but will return in Saturday's game against Duquesne.
