Myles Garrett entered this season with 125.5 career sacks, tied for 20th in NFL history and third among active players, as he continues his climb up the all-time sack list following a trade to the Rams in June. Garrett's total was 10.5 more than any other player since his rookie season in 2017, according to ESPN Research, and he has recorded at least 14 sacks in each of the past five seasons, the longest such streak by any player since 1982.
Six other active players sit in the top 30 all-time alongside Garrett: Von Miller (No. 9), Cameron Jordan (No. 17), Calais Campbell (No. 25), T.J. Watt (No. 26), Danielle Hunter (tied for No. 27) and Khalil Mack (tied for 29th). Aaron Donald, who un-retired to join Garrett on the Rams' defensive line, sits two sacks behind 30th with 111 career sacks.
If Garrett averages roughly his career pace of about 14 sacks this season, he would tie Jason Taylor, who sits at No. 7 all-time. A historic season could see him surpass Michael Strahan at No. 6 and approach the top five. Von Miller, who signed with the Cowboys in August, is only three sacks behind Strahan and could also pass him in his 15th season.
If Garrett reaches 18.5 or more sacks this season, he would hold the record for the most sacks over a two-season span since 1982, according to ESPN Research. His current pace up the all-time list ranks as the second-fastest among the top five all-time, behind only Reggie White.
In Week 1, Watt was the only one of the active sack leaders to record a sack, finishing with two to move into a tie with Campbell for 25th. Donald was held out of the Rams' Week 1 game, while Garrett failed to record a tackle in Australia and was placed on injured reserve after arthroscopic knee surgery, ruling him out for at least four games. After the Rams' opening loss, Garrett called it 'the worst version of myself that I've put out there.'
