Real Salt Lake midfielder Diego Luna is expected to be out for months after a knee injury and will likely undergo an arthroscopic procedure to determine its extent. Luna was absent from Real Salt Lake's loss to New York City FC on Saturday due to the knee problem.
Luna, 23, will miss a crucial stretch of the 2026 MLS season and the U.S. men's national team's next call-up. The U.S. faces Peru, Chile, Mexico and Canada in friendlies in late September through early October in what will be the first games of a new World Cup cycle under coach Mauricio Pochettino.
Luna has made 18 appearances and scored four goals for the U.S. since making his debut in 2024. He was one of the surprise omissions from the 2026 World Cup roster. Depending on the injury's extent, the setback could also impact a possible move abroad this winter after being linked with clubs from outside MLS.
