Cristian González formally took over as Inter Miami head coach on Tuesday after receiving his work permit, reuniting with Lionel Messi whom he faced for Argentina in World Cup qualifiers in 2005.
González agreed to a contract with Inter Miami through June 2028 on Aug. 27 and replaced interim coach Guillermo Hoyos. He led his first training session Tuesday after arriving from Argentina and will be on the sideline for Wednesday's Campeones Cup match against Cruz Azul at Nu Stadium.
Miami holds 45 points in 25 games and sits in second place in the Eastern Conference. The club has won just one of its last nine games. Forward Luis Suárez said the team is ready to start fresh under González, calling the Cruz Azul match a final opportunity to turn things around.
González told reporters he feels privileged to coach Messi and the squad. "I feel completely fulfilled," he said, adding that he and his coaching staff will begin working immediately. Inter Miami plays Cruz Azul on Wednesday before returning to MLS regular season play on Sunday against San Diego.
