The Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 13-10 in a Super Bowl LX rematch to open the season. Quarterback Sam Darnold went down for the remainder of the game, and potentially beyond, with an injury to his right hip on the opening series. Backup quarterback Drew Lock stepped in, and the Seahawks defense forced Patriots quarterback Drake Maye to turn the ball over three times in the fourth quarter.
Lock went 16 of 22 for 187 passing yards and one touchdown, including a 21-yard strike to Jaxon Smith-Njigba that nearly converted a third-and-22. New coordinator Brian Fleury opted against a tush push with tight end AJ Barner on a fourth-and-1 play that instead resulted in Lock's touchdown pass to Smith-Njigba. The Seahawks committed three false start penalties that did not help Lock.
Rookie first-round pick Jadarian Price led Seattle's running back committee with 52 yards on 10 carries. George Holani gained 29 yards on 8 carries, and Emanuel Wilson added 3 yards on 2 attempts. That workload split is expected to continue for at least the first four games while Zach Charbonnet begins the season on the physically unable to perform list.
Cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett had a fourth-quarter interception on a tipped pass that set up Seattle's game-tying touchdown drive, along with an earlier pass breakup. The third-year pro is serving as the Seahawks' No. 3 corner and will face competition for that job from Trevon Diggs and potentially Terrion Arnold, who is on the commissioner's exempt list.
Patriots receiver A.J. Brown left the game in the third quarter with a right ankle injury, removing Maye's top target amid uncertainty about how long Brown might be out.
The Seahawks next play at the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 4:25 p.m. ET. The Patriots next host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. ET.
