Jordan Staal signed a one-year contract extension with the Hurricanes on Tuesday night after captaining the club to a Stanley Cup title in June.
Staal's deal now runs through the 2027-28 season, paying a base salary of $900,000, with a $4 million signing bonus and up to $5.1 million in additional performance bonuses, the team announced in a statement.
Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky said, "Jordan is not only our captain, he's the bedrock of the culture we've established in this organization. His leadership, and on-ice performance throughout last season, and especially in the playoffs, was a primary factor in bringing the Stanley Cup back to Raleigh."
Staal, 38, finished last regular season with 20 goals and 36 points in 75 games as the Hurricanes won the Metropolitan Division. He added eight goals and 12 points in 19 playoff games en route to winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the postseason.
A native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Staal enters this season one point shy of 500 for his career. He was the NHL's No. 2 overall pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2006.
