Chris Kreider signed a one-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens, the team announced Saturday. According to sources, the deal carries a $2.15 million average annual value but includes a bonus structure that could pay him upwards of $5 million should he hit each of his conditions.
Kreider was placed on waivers by the Anaheim Ducks last week for purpose of contract termination. Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek thanked Kreider for his professionalism throughout the process, saying the move was made to create salary cap flexibility.
Kreider had one season remaining on the seven-year, $45.5 million contract he originally signed with the Rangers, which carried a $6.5 million AAV. He is a veteran of 958 games, mostly with the Rangers, and has scored at least 20 goals in 11 of his 14 seasons. He had 50 points, including 22 goals, in 75 games last season, then seven points and two goals in 12 playoff games.
Kreider was a former Rangers teammate of Martin St Louis, who is now the Canadiens coach. Montreal is looking to take the next step after exiting its rebuild, having reached the Eastern Conference Final before losing to the eventual Stanley Cup-champion Hurricanes.
