The Arizona Diamondbacks have designated Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment, a move announced before Sunday's game against the Texas Rangers. Infielder Jose Fernandez was recalled from Triple-A Reno to take Gurriel's roster spot.
Gurriel spent four seasons with the Diamondbacks, earning an All-Star nod in 2023, when the team made it to the World Series for the second time in franchise history. He tore his ACL late in the 2025 season and returned ahead of schedule on April 18.
The 32-year-old Cuban struggled with more injuries and inconsistency after returning, hitting .210 with two homers and 22 RBIs in 51 games. Gurriel spent his first five seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays and is a career .271 hitter over nine big league seasons.
