Tennessee S Farooq suffers season-ending torn patellar tendon
Tennessee starting safety Edrees Farooq suffered a torn patellar tendon in his right knee Friday and will miss the season, a UT spokesperson confirmed to ESPN. Farooq, a junior from Columbia, Maryland, was expected to be one of the leaders of new coordinator Jim Knowles' defense. He left the practice field Friday in an ambulance and was taken to UT Medical Center in Knoxville.
UT football released a statement Saturday saying, "We stand with Edrees and support him as he begins the recovery process. We know he will continue to make a strong leadership impact on our team this fall."
Last season, Farooq started all 13 games and ranked second in the SEC with four forced fumbles. He was also second on the team with two interceptions to go with 76 tackles.
The Volunteers added three experienced transfers to their secondary as coach Josh Heupel attempted to improve a defense that ranked next-to-last in the SEC in pass defense at 244.8 yards and 14th in scoring defense at 28.8 points in 2025. Michigan transfer TJ Metcalf is the projected starter at the other safety spot, and Kansas State transfer Qua Moss is expected to start at nickelback.
Penn State transfer Dejuan Lane was playing behind Farooq during preseason camp and should move up the depth chart. Sophomore Dylan Lewis and freshman Jamyan Theodore are also battling for playing time at safety.
