Matt Chapman to have season-ending surgery for abdominal strain

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman will undergo season-ending surgery on Tuesday for an abdominal strain. The procedure will take place in Philadelphia, where Chapman was evaluated by Dr. William C. Meyers, who confirmed the core muscle injury.

Chapman, 33, has had a challenging season, batting .235 with seven home runs and 42 RBIs over 84 games. He signed a six-year, $151 million contract in September 2024, which extends through 2030.

In addition to Chapman's injury, catcher Daniel Susac underwent an MRI that revealed a fracture of the patella in his left knee. Susac sustained the injury during a game against the Detroit Tigers when he fouled a ball off his knee.

Manager Tony Vitello expressed hope for Susac's recovery but acknowledged it will take time. He noted that the team is assessing the situation following the freak injury.
