Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes steps down

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has stepped down from his role and will join Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal in a similar position, sources told ESPN. The 47-year-old had held the position since joining from AFC Bournemouth in March 2024, when he was brought in to lead the rebuild after Jürgen Klopp's departure as manager.

Hughes oversaw the appointment of Arne Slot as Klopp's successor, with Slot winning the Premier League in his first season. He also appointed Andoni Iraola as head coach following Slot's departure at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

Hughes informed the club of his decision to leave earlier this year, sources told ESPN. His involvement in planning for this summer's transfer window was at an advanced stage when the decision was made, and it was decided he would remain in post until the end of the window. Sources told ESPN that at no point was permission sought or offered for Hughes to work for any other club during this period.

In a statement, Hughes said it had been "a source of great pride" to serve Liverpool and expressed gratitude to ownership, club staff, players and fans. "I'll always follow and support the club with great affection, and I wish everyone involved nothing but success for this season and beyond," he said.

Liverpool are now searching for a successor to Hughes, with FSG president Mike Gordon leading the process. Other members of the club's football operations department, including FSG Technical Director Julian Ward, FSG Director of Football Development Pedro Marques, Assistant Sporting Director David Woodfine and chief scout Barry Hunter, will continue to oversee the club's strategy in the interim.

Hughes is expected to join former Bournemouth colleague Simon Francis in the Middle East.
