DeWanna Bonner signing with Dream after Mercury buyout

DeWanna Bonner signed with the Atlanta Dream after the Phoenix Mercury granted her a contract buyout. Bonner cleared waivers Wednesday evening and joined a Dream squad fourth in the standings at 25-13.

Bonner averaged 10.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals this season with Phoenix, starting 26 of 37 games. The terms of her Dream deal are unknown.

Mercury GM Nick U'Ren said the team worked out the buyout to give Bonner the opportunity to chase a title in what could be her final postseason. Bonner said she was grateful to Phoenix for the chance and to the Mercury organization and fans who embraced her throughout her career.

The 39-year-old forward/guard, the second-oldest player in the league, is expected to come off the bench for Atlanta. She ranks third in league history in career points and fifth in career rebounds, and has won three Sixth Woman of the Year awards.
